Shamrocks Win Overtime Thriller Over Westville By Harry Griffey The Westville Blackhawks visited the North Liberty Shamrocks Friday night and went away with their third loss of the season. The Blackhawks had won nine games and were favored to win their tenth but a scrappy Shamrock quintet had other ideas. Johnny Summers got things going with a five foot jump shot but sophomore Steve Sebert hit a jumper followed by teammate Shawn Hannon. rolling when Jeff Martin stole the ball and found Summers open for an easy one. Summers grabbed an errant Blackhawk in-bounds pass for another tally and he tickled the twine again on a rebound shot. Brian Donathen took a pass from Mark Vanderhagen to put the Shamrocks in the lead 14-9. Sebert stopped the streak by popping in an 18 footer. Summers and Donathen each got a free throw and Vanderhagen canned a nine footer and the period ended with the Shamrock fans on their feet as their heros led 18-11. Summers again started the scor- , ing by hitting one free throw. Bruce Griffey, a non-starter in this t game, sank a jumper from about five feet away. The Blackhawks scored the next three baskets before Griffey got a tip-in. A steal and a pass from Griffey to Donathen pushed the lead back to seven points but the Hawks got two more buckets and a free throw to make it 26-24. Both teams traded a couple of baskets and Summers made a free throw and got a tip-in at the buzzer to give Liberty a 33-28 lead at halftime. The third quarter saw North Lierty gradually lose most of its lead as the hustling Blackhawks pulled within two at the end 44-42. Throughout most of the game both teams had some bad passes and it was a bad pass that caused the Hawks a chance to tie it before the end of the third quarter. In the final stanza the Hawks went ahead on two free throws by Sebert, 50-49. They got their biggest lead of 54-49 before Martin got two baskets and a charity shot to knot the score. Liberty went ahead on a steal and a basket by Summers with 15 seconds left. Hannon sent the game into overtime with a 20 footer with only four seconds left. At 2:20 of the extra period, Westville held onto the ball to go for the last shot. Liberty zoned them to make them take the long shot and was able to steal the ball at :18. After a time out they worked the ball to Martin who dribbled to the key and went up in the air for a jumper, but spotted Todd Allsop open underneath and threw him a perfect pass which Allsop put up and in at :04. Coach Glen Keel is optimistic. "Our trend has been upward. We have won three out of our last four and 1 think we are beginning to jell." Liberty was 4-8 after this game with another game, on the road at Wheeler, on Saturday night. Seven Shamrocks shared in the scoring getting from five to 16 points. Jeff Martin topped the parade with 16 points on seven of 10 from the field and two of three from the foul line. John Summers was close behind with 15. six of 10 from the floor and three of eight from the charity stripe. Westville was led by Hannon's 16 with Sebert adding 15 and Curry 13. However behind these three the next highest point total was four. Shamrock Bees Destroy Hawks The Shamrocks were devestating against the Blackhawk Bees as everyone played and scored. Brian Griffey and Jeff Donathen had 10 points apiece, followed by Rick Stefaniak with 9 and Steve Snyder with 8. Those long return trips aren't quite so frustrating after a win. Coach Glen Keel started boys who are normally reserves and wasn’t disappointed by them. They played with confidence and pride. Scrappy Larry O’Connor was all over the court both on defense and offense scoring 10 points. The Shamrocks got off to a 19-11 first quarter lead by using their height and leaping abilities by getting some alley opp baskets from O'Connor and John Gouker to 6’6" Todd Allsop. In the second quarter the scoring was started by Wheeler’s Wilson, getting a rebound bucket followed by two more by the games high point man, Curtis. The Liberty press began to bother Wheeler as Liberty got some steals and turnovers from hurried passes. Seven different Shamrocks scored in this quarter as they increased their lead to 13 points. 39-26. The second half started with Bruce Griffey getting an alley opp

from O’Connor and tough Gene Davis pumped one in from close. Lemaster answered with two baskets and a free throw. Curtis got four more baskets and Martin one for Wheeler. Griffey netted four and John Summers one as the quarter ended with Liberty out in front 51-44. The final stanza saw the Shamrocks scoring from underneath by Summers and lots of substituting going on. Coach Keel was able to give all his players plenty of playing time and used them well. The Shamrocks raised their season record to 5-8 with the win while Wheeler continued the state's longest losing streak as this was their 48th loss in a row dating back over two years. Griffey and Summers topped the Shamrocks scoring with 13 points each while O'Connor hit double figures getting 10 points. The game honors went to Wheeler's Curtis as he totaled 29 points, their only double figure total. Shamrock Bees Now 9-5 Rick Stefaniak scored 14 and Dan Stevens 12 as they led the Shamrock Bees to a 46-41 victory over Wheeler in their game Saturday night.
