Jimtown Stars Too Much For Falcons 76-62 For the John Glenn fans who took the time to go to Jimtown Friday night, they saw a very interesting basketball game. Yes, the Falcons did drop another game but to the “basketball fan" they had an opportunity to see two teams in action that provided some good offensive basketball plus they also saw two individuals on the Jimtown team that were worth watching as they played the game the way it was meant to be played, hard and complete. Troy Neely, a junior transfer from Elkhart Memorial, displayed some fantastic talent. Not only is he the best pure shooter we have seen this year and maybe for more years than that in small school circles, he is a team player who does it all. He passes well, he rebounds well, he works on defense and oh does he shoot. His shot selection was good as he is not just a gunner, but give him an inch and he'll get a basket. Add to that a great game also out of another junior, Kevin Miller, who really made things happen, and you have a combined 55 points that paced the host Jimmies to a 76-62 win over a Falcon team that once again played hard and played well in the type of game the fans like, a lot of action and not much fouling or constant turning over of the ball with mistakes. Jimtown, with this win, moved only to a 6-9 record for the year but for first year coach Steve Longfellow, who as well as Glenn first year coach Jim Waller, inherited a team without much returning from the season before. Add to this the fact Jimtown plays a much tougher schedule, such teams as South Bend LaSalle, Concord, and other much larger schools, and you have one reason their record is only 6-9. It is, however, 4-0 in the Northern State Conference, as they lead the loop with only LaVille and New Prairie yet to play. They are almost assured of at least a tie and of course, two wins would give them an unbeaten and clear-cut conference title. Glenn slipped to 1-12 and this also was their ninth defeat in a row, a very disheartening season for both the coach and the boys who are still out there giving their all each game. With only eight boys on the varsity until late season promotions, coach Waller has his work cut out for him and the kids have to go . . . and go . . . and go as there just isn’t much help in this undermaned situation. The B-Team also

only has nine bodies including three freshmen to try and carry the load. The Falcons drew first blood in a real offensive-style game. Greg Gratner hit a 16 footer to put the first numbers on the board and Bob Muncie picked up a loose ball and laid it in for a 4-0 lead before Miller hit his first of six first quarter baskets as he was the head man on a fast break for an easy lay-in. A left corner shot by Tom Moore was next but Miller came right back with a medium length baseline jumper, only to have Moore find twine again from well out on the left baseline. Brent Moss hit a lay-in that was quickly followed by a 13 footer that was true by Muncie as action was going end to end and points resulting at both ends in this fast paced game. Miller hit a little six footer and for the first time the Jimmies tied the score as Moss banged an 18 footer, almost out of his range. C raig Ochs hit a 12 footer for the lead once again, but Jimtown was about to explode as they found no less than six baskets in the next two and a half minutes while holding the Falcons to a single basket, that on a steal and lay-in by Moore. Moss was first with a tip, then Neely took his first shot of the night and it was good from the corner. A theft and lay-in by Miller preceeded Moore's lay-in and Miller then hit again from under two times in a row and Neely dropped a 12 footer for a quick 22-14 lead. Kris Tuttle scored on a tip but Neely tickled the twine once again from 16 foot and the first quarter ended some 40 seconds later with Jimtown in front 24-16. The Kevin Miller show turned over to the Troy Neely shooting exhibition in the second stanza as Neely hadn’t been anxious, in fact he had several key passes that gave teammates points in the first quarter. Tuttle and Moore hit the period's first two baskets but Neely flipped an 8 footer up and of course in. After Moore hit one of two free throws. Miller swished a 14 footer only to have Ochs match the points with a tip-in. If Neely had a weakness, it was displayed now as he was fouled and only hit one of two from the line, but after Tuttle took a good pass from Steve Hardesty for a lay-in, Neely bombed one from 21 foot, his longest of the night. Dale Smith, a reserve guard and another junior, hit two free throws but so did Ochs for Glenn. Neely then hit an 11 footer and an 18 footer back-to-back and after Miller found net from a 10 foot baseline shot, Neely did his thing on a tip-in to jump the Jimmies to a big 41-27 lead with 2:05 left in the half, it

was a good last two minutes for Glenn as Tuttle hit first from the left baseline deep, then Muncie from medium range and Tuttle again on a rebound lay-in and when the buzzer went off it was 41-33 at halftime. Shooting percentages for the first half had to be very high and the third quarter did find the pace slowing down a little and also found Neely missing his first shot of the game, his tenth after he hit the opening basket to add to his eight for eight first half. This was followed by a 12 footer by Tuttle as he was playing his best offensive game in his two years, moving well both with and without the ball making things happen instead of waiting for them to happen. Moore then hit from the corner and Ochs put a fine move on the Jimtown defense for a lay-in bringing the Falcons back to within four, 43-39 after a little over two minutes had passed. However. Moss hit another outside shot but Tuttle matched this with a 7 footer in the lane. A pair of charity shots, rare in this fast action game, by Hershberger, was followed by a 10 footer by Moore, keeping the Falcons within four. A pair of lay-ins over a short period by Miller upped the lead to eight again but Moore was on target from 13 footer only to have Moss put a rebound back up and in. The Falcons killed about a minute to get the final shot which Ochs beat the buzzer with from 12 foot. The lead was 53-47 heading into the final stanza. Neely, who had only one basket and that coming right after the tip in the third quarter, soon got back on the offensive track despite efforts of the Falcon defense to keep the ball from him. He used a good fake and drove for a lay-in for the first basket and then wiggled free for a shorty the next time down the floor. Hardesty hit the second of a two shot foul and Tuttle found range from 18 foot only to have Moss can one from nine foot. Tuttle got his ninth basket of the night but Neely swished a long baseline jumper and after Muncie hit from the left baseline for Glenn, Neely put a short turn around shot in after another defense-clearing fake. Miller pushed the Jimmies to an 11 point lead with a fast break lay-in with 4:39 still left in the game. Moore scored twice from the 15 foot line, but Smith hit one of two to keep the lead at 10. Hardesty hit a 7 footer in the lane but at this point Jimtown started setting on the ball to run some time off. After about a minute passed. Miller got free for a lay-in but Hardesty banged an 18 footer. A good outlet pass found Hershberger alone as Jimtown beat the Falcons press, but Moore came right back with al7 footer. At this point the Jimmies displayed a good fourcorner offense for a high school team and ran the clock well down until Moss was free for a lay-in. After a missed Falcon shot, Neely got his final points of the night and then a foul at the buzzer gave Miller the game's final two points from the foul line for the impressive victory. Neely topped ali scorers with 29 points, 14 baskets and a single free throw made up his total. However, the steady Miller also was well in the 20's with 26 on 12 baskets and two of two from the line. Moss added 14, ail from the floor as these three picked up all but seven of the Jimtown total. A 19 point total by Tom Moore was just ahead of Tuttle's 18 while Ochs also reached double figures with 10. Glenn B-Team Wlna The Falcons B-Team stopped their slide of late to hold on for a thrilling 45-42 victory over the Jimtown reserves. This was their first win since before Christmas also.
