Girls Sectional Play Underway At La Ville School First round play will be completed before most receive this week s copy of “The IndependentNews" as the 385 girls basketball teams are fighting for the title of champion of Indiana in the fourth annual high school girls basketball tourney. The play at sectional level will be completed by Saturday night with the following three week ends featuring regional, semi-state and state final action, a similar pattern to that of the boys which will follow the week after completion of the girls tourney. Locally, both the North Liberty and John Glenn teams play Wednesday night, having their first round games at the LaVille site on the first night of play. The Glenn girls are the defending sectional champions, last year taking a perfect 19-0 record to the Elkhart regional before bowing to a good South Bend Riley team. This area of Northern Indiana again is one of the strong areas, but the real power of the area is seperated in different sectionals, and in some cases, even different regional fields. The Warsaw team is the defending state champions, winning the title twice in the three year history of the tournament. They will open play against a rapidly improving Culver girts team. The host Tippecaone Valley team is also a strong entry as is Rochester, a real strong and unbeaten team ranked third in the state. The winner there will feed into the Rochester Regional. Meanwhile, the South Bend schools, a late starter in girls basketball, now in just their third season, has several strong teams as they meet at the Mishawaka site with Riley, Adams, Clay and LaSalle all rather strong. Their winner will go to Elkhart. Also very highly regarded is the Michigan City Rogers team who will be the favorite at Michigan City, but that winner will go to regional action at Valparaiso. Meanwhile, at LaVille. Glenn and Plymouth will be rated the stronger of the teams with Glenn a little questionable due to the leg injury to Mary Huffstetter. Without her, they just aren’t as strong and could have a definate bearing on the outcome of the tourney. A 13-4 record is owned by Glenn, three of the losses coming since the injury to Huffstetter. Action begins with North Liberty and Bremen in the first game, this a 6:30 start on Wednesday. Glenn will meet LaVille in the second contest immediately following. On Thursday. Plymouth will meet Argos in the 6:30 contest while the second game will feature the two Wednesday night winners. These two Thursday victors will return to LaVille on Saturday night at 7:30 to fight it out for the title and the right to advance one week to the region als. The regional that the LaVille winner is in will be played at Elkhart with the North Wood win ner meeting the LaVille winner in the first game on Saturday. February 10. The South Bend and Elk hart winners will meet in the second game with the two after noon winners meeting for the title that night. The semi-states are set for Saturday. February 17, with the local path following on to Fort Wayne where the Elkhart winner
