Culver Girls Top Glenn Cagers In Bi-County Finals The John Glenn girls basketball team, playing without their leading scorer and most experienced player. Mary Huffstetter due to an injury, dropped a decision to a good and hustling Culver Community High School girls team Saturday night to end their two year dominance of the annual Bi-County tourney. The final score was 52-46 in the championship game played at LaVille. Things just didn’t go right from the start. First of all. playing without Mary was probably more of a mental factor than physical as she has always been the one to lean on when in trouble. Add to it a little confusion when Glenn took the wrong color uniforms to the game and prior to the start had to get fitted in the blue jerseys of the host school. LaVille's uniforms. The gals did start rather well as some “feeling out” was done as both teams got adjusted to the crowd and the conditions. Tammy Tuttle hit first one of several long set shots she had during the night as she was accurate from 16 foot for the game’s first points. Culver came back with a lay-in by Cindy Pitts and took a brief lead a minute and a half later on one of two free throws by Robin Wiggin. Teresa Kemp connected from the left baseline well into the corner. The Culver gals came right back with a medium range baseline shot by Pitts and the lead changed hands with each score as Tuttle bombed another, this one from 19 feet. Anne Wiggin, the other half of a very good sister tandem, hit from 13 foot as both teams were letting fly as play progressed, much to the delight of the growing crowd. An eight footer by Kemp put Glenn back in front and they stretched the lead to 10-7 as both Kemp and Pam Aitken hit one of two free throw attempts as body contact was also a part of this game. Anne Wiggin was true again, this time from 11 foot, but Traci Florian hit a 10 footer in the lane and Barb Mann put a short shot up and in for a 14-9 lead as only 45 seconds remained in the period. However, the Culver

girls weren t done as Jorja Jones hit one of two free throws and Anne w 'gg'ns got her third basket of the quarter from medium range to make it 14-12 after the first period. I he Culver girls really took the game to Glenn in the second quarter as they had started a more aggressive style of play in the latter part of the first stanza and also were moving the ball well on offense. They Lady Falcons weren't nearly as aggressive on offense and didn't move the ball real well and the momentum went completely to C ulver. Robin Wiggin tied the score as she connected on a fast break lay-in almost a minute into the quarter. The big Culver center, Susan Keller, then got a short baseline shot in but Tuttle came back with a rebound shot to knot it at 16. Keller hit a rebound shot but Kemp found twine from 11 foot and luttie swished a 13 footer to put Glenn in the lead again, w hich proved to be the last time in the contest. Ihe next two minutes found Culver really dominating play. Keller scored her third basket of the quarter from under and Anne Wiggin then hit after stealing a ball for her basket. Robin Wiggin added a lay-in before Mann matched this for Glenn. However, Anne Wiggin got another lay-in as the C ulver girls were moving to the basket and with just eight seconds left, Keller was perfect on two free throws for a 28-22 C ulver halftime lead. The first three minutes of the third quarter were really action packed. Pitts was first to score with a medium baseline shot but Mann canned a 13 looter for Glenn. Robin Wiggin hit a lay-in, closely followed by one from Tuttle only to have Robin Wiggin do it again driving to the basket on the left side real well. Sister Anne then swiped a pass and drove for a lay-in and with just less than a minute and a half gone in the second half. Culver had moved to a 36-26 lead as 12 points had already been scored in this quarter. Mann was next to score, hitting two free throws. However. Pitts came right back with a baseline shot but Kemp matched this from 16 foot as play was going from one end to the other. Robin Wiggin raised the lead to 10 again with a long shot from the left corner as
5:18 still showed on the clock. The time was only significant due to the fact that Culver was not to score again in this quarter and after the two teams blitzed in 20 points in very short time, only three more baskets were to be scored in the remaining five minutes plus. In fact almost three full minutes passed as turnovers got plentiful. Tuttle broke the long dry spell with her longest bomb of the night, a 22 footer. Florian then hit the period's last two baskets, coming almost two minutes apart, but the Lady Falcons had cut the lead to 40-36 with one quarter left to play. Glenn had gained the momentum late in the third quarter but that can and did change quickly in the final stanza. One of two free throws by the very talented Robin Wiggin broke the long Culver dry spell and Florian hit a lay-in for Glenn cutting the lead to three. However, another lay-in by the center. Keller, was followed by a perfect four-for-four from the foul line in 10 seconds time by Anne Wiggin and with 6:20 showing on the clock the Culver girls were up by nine once again. Culver started letting the air out of the ball when they got it on offense, but it probably was a little too early as fundamentals are still not a strong part of girls basketball. A Culver error let Tuttle race free with the ball for a solo lay-in, but Robin Wiggin was fouled and added one more point in two tries to Culver's lead. Florian then hit a driving lay-in in the lane and after Culver turned the ball over some 50 second later. Tuttle hit from 17 foot to cut the lead to 48-44 with 2:34 left in the game. The game then turned into the Robin Wiggin show as this firey competitor put on quite a display of ball handling as Culver was killing the clock. A minute passed before a pass found Pitts all alone for a lay-in from the right baseline, but Florian, playing a very g<x>d game for Glenn, hit from 13 foot to keep the deficit just four with now :51 showing on the clock. It took a foul to stop the clock and Robin Wiggin was true on the first of a one-and-one and after a Glenn miss. Culver was in command the rest of the way and two fouls in the last seconds resulted in only one point, but ran time off the clock and that was the most important thing as the Culver girls wrapped up the title 52-46. Wiggin Sisters Pace Attack Culver was led by the Wiggin sisters who not only produced 30 points between them, 16 for Anne and 14 for Robin, but were the two dependables that handled the ball and controlled the tempo of the game for the w inners. Keller ended in double figures with 10 also. A 16 point performance by Tuttle, all on baskets, paced the Glenn scoring while Florian added 14 in addition to playing a fine and hard floor game. The Glenn girls hit only four of 13 from the foul stripe and Culver was successful on 12 of 27 from the line as there movement on offense was drawing a lot of fouls from the Glenn girls.
