CMA Outscores Falcons In Big Offensive Show The Culver Military Academy Eagles balance and power under the baskets offset a great individual performance by John Glenn’s Tom Moore Thursday night as the Eagles won their first every varsity victory in the annual Bi-County Tourney at LaVille. The free-scor-ing game found the Eagles boosting their season record to 5-4 while the Falcons slipped to 1-11 as the 80-75 game provided plenty of offensive thrills for the crowd. The game started without too much indication of the big offensive show that was to develop. Scoring was rather slow, in fact, for the first period, but action really picked up in the second quarter for the rest of the night. Craig Ochs opened the scoring putting a medium length baseline jumper in just 10 seconds after the opening tip. However, well over a minute passed before Tom Dunstan, a 6’2" powerful center, hit a 10 footer for the Cadets. Ochs was next with a pair of free throws and with over three minutes gone. Kris Tuttle hit a short turn around shot for a 6-2 Falcon lead. Todd Schmidt, a 6’2" sophomore who is starting to make his niche in the Academy circles, took a fine pass from Dard Hutchinson for an easy lay-in. However, again it was Ochs, this time from nine foot. A pair of Dunstan one-pointers, and then a Dunstan short shot, tied it at eight with just seconds over two minutes left in the period. Bob Muncie hit immediately after moving down court but action went right back to the Culver offensive end where Hutchinson hit from 15 and tied it again. With :54 showing on the clock, Hutchinson put the Eagles ahead with a 14 footer from the side and the first quarter ended CMA 12, Glenn 10. The big individual offensive display of Tom Moore’s started right after the second quarter tip. He was fouled and hit both shots. Hutchinson hit again for his third straight basket, but Moore took charge on a fast break and laid one in to tie it again at 14. The Eagles then took a lead they never again lost even though the game stayed

close on most occasions. John Mosley, a great athlete, hit first a pair of free throws and then one of two just seconds later. Schmidt put a rebound back up and in and after Moore hit from 13 foot on a juniper. Cadets came back with three baskets in less than a minute with Hutchinson. Schmidt and Dunstan hitting in that order for a quick nine point lead. The Cadets were using the superior strength and rebounding talents to great advantage by this time. The teams traded points for a while as it was Tuttle, then Mosley. Moore popped a 16 footer and after one of two charity shots by Dunstan. Moore cracked one from 12. Mosley hit a lay-in. but Moore really had it going now and got a 17 footer to drop on which he was fouled and completed the three point play. He then added a 15 footer from the side and the lead was trimmed to three, 30-27. The Cadets then dominated play as Dunstan hit on the front end of a fast break, then added one of two free shots, Wayne Cole got his first basket of the game, Schmidt hit next and Hutchinson completed a nine point streak in a little over a minute that blew them to a 12 point lead. However, with 21 seconds left in the half. Moore hit again on a short shot on which he w as fouled and hit the free throw to tie a Bi-County record of scoring 18 points in one quarter as his hot hand was all that held the Falcons in the game. They still trailed by nine. 39-30 at the main intermission. The offensive show continued in the second half. Culver was successful in getting the good short shots and used the board strength while the Falcons, as has been the case all year, were better from medium range, especially with Moore looking like the Moore of before when he used to drill the basket consistently from medium range. Schmidt and Mosley hit back-to-back lay-ins to start the second half, but Muncie picked up an easy one for Glenn. Mosley hit again as he was now really playing ball on both ends of the floor but Muncie canned a short side shot and Moore found nothing but net with a long baseline jumper. A 16 footer by Schmidt was true, but again it was Moore as the Eagles simply couldn't stop the
Glenn 5’10" senior on his great shooting performance. Dunstan hit from 12 and after Ochs got one of two charity pitches to fall. Dunstan put a short turn around shot back up and in to open a 12 point lead again. Tuttle hit a pair of foul shots but Mosley countered with a short jumper. Ochs dropped an eight foot turn around shot but Dunstan then got two lay-ins in a row for the Cadets biggest lead of the night. 61-47. Despite the fact that only 1:31 remained on Dunstan’s second layin, plenty of scoring was yet to come in this quarter. Moore hit from 17, got the ball back and tickled the twine from 18. Ochs added a short side shot and after Dunstan hit again from under. Tuttle got a lay-in and Moore picked up a loose ball from a scramble and flipped in a ‘‘hope’’ shot shortly before the gun. This cut the CMA lead to 63-57 with both teams scoring very freely for two full quarters. Mosley opened the final stanza with a fast break lay-in. Moore was fouled and was true two more times from the line and the Falcons found their best chance of the night to get back in the game when Ochs hit a short side shot when he was left alone on an inbounds play. After moving down court, Glenn got the ball back and a driving attempt to cut the score to two points failed when a ball slipped from Ochs' hands on the baseline before he could get a shot off. The Cadets then put on their charge. Schmidt was fouled as they started moving the ball around a little more cautiously and he made both ends of two-shot situation. A short baseline jumper by Dunstan was followed by a 9 footer by Cole as they opened up again despite some pleas from their bench to take it easy. This made it 71-61 as time was starting to be important with four and a half minutes left. Muncie hit a driving short shot from the lane, but Cole tipped in a missed CMA shot and after getting possession again, the Cadets did slow down action until Dunstan got free for a short baseline jumper to make it 75-63 with 2:31 left. Ochs promptly cut it back to 10 with a 14 footer, but Cole got another tip-in as the clock now showed 1:45 and the lead was again 12. Neither team scored until just 80 seconds remained, but here again, a lot of points were squeezed into a little time to set the final score. Muncie hit first from 8 foot, then Moore got his first basket of the final period as they were doubling up on him real well. An inbounds violation on Culver gave Glenn the ball right back and Moore did it again, hitting from 14 foot and this also cut the lead to 77-71 with 48 seconds left. A foul gave Schmidt a chance for a one-and-one which he hit the first, but the icing on the cake came as he missed the second and Dunstan got the board and put it back up and in to finish everything but the final margin. Tuttle got the game's last four points and a great offensive show ended 80-75 in the Academy’s favor. Moore Hits 34 Scoring was high for three solid quarters and a real scoring oddity occured in this game. Nine of the 10 starters scored, no one else, and all scored in the double figures. A big 34 point total on 14 baskets and six free shots by Moore led all the scorers, but Culver's Dunstan totaled 28 on a dozen baskets and four one pointers. Ochs finished with 17. Tuttle 14 and Muncie 10 for Glenn. The other Culver totals were 15 for both Schmidt and Mosley while Hutchinson had 12 and Cole 10.
