The meeting was called to order by Mrs. Amybelle Wardman, Unit President. Mrs. Wardman thanked the members for coming despite the cold temperatures. Mrs. Linder Schmeltz, Community Service chairman, gave a special report on the Christmas baskets which the American Legion and Auxiliary distributed on Saturday, December 23. A total of 16
baskets were delivered to needy residents in the community. The ; baskets are delivered annually by the Post and Unit with several of the baskets going to senior citizens in the Walkerton area. This year a total of $397.00 was spent on the food baskets. Following the report by Mrs. Schmeltz much discussion was held by the members present concerning the yearly project. It was noted that many Walkerton residents are under the impression that the food baskets are distributed through monies collected by the Salvation Army kettles prior to Christmas. Mrs. Schmeltz pointed out that even though the Salvation Army committee and the Legion and Auxiliary Committees do work together in regards to their individual lists of recipients, the money is not divided between the projects! The American Legion and Auxiliary members solely support the financial needs of their Christmas Basket project. Mrs. Pauline Klopfenstein gave a report on the Christmas program and New Years Programs at Miller’s Merry Manor. The Auxiliary Unit gave Christmas gifts to the veterans and their widows who are residents at the Nursing Home. A total of $41.56 was spent on the socks and toiletry items presented to each. The members voted to purchase class room flags for the St. Patricks School rooms. Mrs. Wardman will also order some house flags which will later be made available to the public at a minimal charge. Mrs. Wardman closed the meeting with an additional Americanism report. A report was given on the Past United States Presidents who have birthdays during the month of January. Mrs. Wardman also stressed the need for National Security and supporting the needs of the Civil Defense programs in our area. The next meeting will be held on February 1 with special reports being given by the candidates to Indiana Hoosier Girls State in June. OBITUARIES RAYMOND E.
