A program that may be of interest to these successful trophy hunters is the Hoosier Record Buck Program. It was established to increase appreciation of Indiana white-tailed deer, recognize trophy deer heads, honor successful hunters and promote sportsmanship among deer hunters. Any deer legally taken in Indiana is eligible. The hunter submitting the head must attest that the deer was taken in fair chase and sign a statement to that effect. Deer do not necessarily have to have been taken in a recent season. Some deer on the record list were taken in the early 1960’5. A cumulative list is maintained and deer heads are ranked according to their Boone and Cnxkett score. Either head mounts or antler skull mounts are acceptable. All entries must have been dried at least 60 days before scoring. Antler scoring is divided into two categories: typical and non typical. Typical antlers arc normal, symmetrical antlers. Non-typical antlers possess a large number of points which arc abnormal in shape or position so there is no balance or symmetry. State standards for minimum requirements arc less than those of national competition. State minimum for typical is 140 and for non-typical IbO. Minimum scores for Boone and Crockett are 170 and 195, respectively . Sportsmen with qualifying deer are awarded a certificate of recognition and their names arc added to the current hst of trophies. There arc undoubtedly a lot more trophies that have been taken in Indiana that have not been measured and entered in the Record Buck Program. If you have a trophy or know someone who may have a record buck, notify your local wildlife biologist so that he can measure the deer.
