Oregon Township Trustee, presented to Sister M. Charles Schauer. C.S.C.. Program Director of Starke County Senior Services, with a check for SSOO. Ihe funds were used with matching federal funds to support the Senior Services program. Anne Huffstetter and Dick Jones were crowned queen and king of the 1978 John Glenn High School hxitball homecoming. The senior class won first place with their float in the homecoming parade. Effective soon the North Liberty Police Department will be having the St. Joseph County Police Department dispatch the North Liberty Police at various times of the day. October Sam Frame was honored on October 5 when he received his 50 year pin from the Walkerton Masonic Lodge No. 619 F & AM. Walkerton’s Punt, Pass and Kick competition was held on October 7 sponsored by Powers FordMtrcurv Sales and the Walkerton Jaycees with the following winners, Jimmy Tuttle, eight year old; David Searfoss, nine year old; Mike McDonald, ten year old; Mike Hayes, eleven year old; and Mike Aitken. 13 year old winner. The Oregon-Da vis Lady Cats won the John Glenn volleyball invitational Career Day at John Glenn High Sch(K)l presented many facets of opportunities in careers to the students. The Junior Miss Tea was held at the J Ac J Restaurant with the contestants. their parents and the committee headed by Larry Setnor, of the Walkerton Jaycees. Jack Frost visited the area on Sunday. October 15. Ihe Walkerton Halloween party was held on Sunday. October 29 from 1:30 to 2:30. The Norfolk and Western Railroad crossing on Indiana 23 north was closed to traffice for repairs of the crossing from October 30 to November 3. Nosember Fall elections were held on November 7. Ihe John Glenn football team ended their season on a winning note, a come from behind victory over Jimtown, to mark their best ever record at John Glenn, a 7-3 season. Thirty-three area merchants participated in "The IndependentNews’’ Turkey Days annual promotion November 9-11. Ihe Kixmtz Lake-Oregon Township Fire Department, established in 1945, added a new fire truck to their fleet. Twelve senior girls competed for the Walkerton Area Junior Miss title with Maria Stanley, of Lakeville, being crowned the new Junior Miss. Debbie Wolff, Walkerton, was first runner up and Miss Congeniality. Anita Ecker. Plymouth, won the scholastic award and Lisa
Foresman, North Liberty, won the poise and appearance award. December The Walkerton Elementary School Christmas program was held on December 11 at the John Glenn High School gymnasium. The musical was well attended. On December 13 the Chamber of Commerce awards banquet was held at the Walkerton 1.0.0. F. Icxlge. New equipment has been purchased b\ the county highway department for the area. An open house was held on December 17 in honor of Carl Eskridge. retiring clerk-treasurer of North Liberty, at the Communitv Building. Walkerton Police now have radar in their patrol cars. Santa visited the area to talk with the kiddies in both Walkerton and North Liberty. Many area merchants sent their Christmas greetings and New Years wishes through "The Inde-pendent-News”.
