NIPSCO REPORTS ON PROJECTED WINTER GAS NEEDS AND SUPPLIES In a recently Tiled up-dated report with the Public Service Commission of Indiana. Northern Indiana Public Sers ice Company indicated it would be able to meet all residential, commercial and industrial needs for natural gas during the three-month period commencing December 1. 1978, barring any un for seen curtailments by its five pipeline suppliers or diversions by the federal government. Demands of residential customers during the December through February inters al usually account for 47 per cent of their annual natural gas consumption. According to the report, if weather conditions arc equivalent to those experienced in the winter of 1976-77. one of the coldest in the nation s history, estimated total customer demand for gas in December would be roughly 28.892 billion cubic feet (bcf). NIPSCO projects it would meet the requirement with 24.659 bcf of daily flow gas and 4.233 bcf from the company’s storage facilities. This would leave approximately 21.58 bcf in storage as of January 1, 1979. Still using the winter of 19761977 as the basis for comparison, January demand would be about 33.1 bcf and would be met with 24.864 bcf flow gas and 8.279 from storage, leaving a reserve of 13.304 bcf on February 1. 1977. The utility would fill a predicted February demand of 24.579 bcf with 22.340 bcf flow gas and 2.239 bcf from storage, leaving 11.065 bcf of useable gas in storage on March 1. 1979. Curtailment plans approved by federal regulatory agencies substantially reduce the amount of gas NIPSCO is entitled to under its supply contracts, however NIPSCO is receiving almost 0.8 bcf of gas per day this w inter from its pipeline suppliers or about 24 bcf each month, compared to almost 0.7 bcf a day or about 21 bcf a month last year. Earlier this year, NIPSCO signed a contract with Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company for an additional 2 billion cubic feet of gas from their storage. Along with further development at utility's Royal Center underground storage project, this brought NIPSCO's total usable storage capacity to 27.8 billion cubic feet at the beginning of the 1978-1979 heating season, comparJOYOUS NOEL > /'■ * i A * ■ • • 0 .■ I • < I May the peace and joy of the first Christmas time be yours. ed to 25.8 billion cubic feet last year. NIPSCO again emphasized that conservation and wise, effecient use of natural gas should continually be practiced by all customers, especially during winter months when demand is at its highest.
