Shamrocks Win First; Beat New Prairie Tuesday By Harry Griffey I he Shamnxks traveled to New Prairie Tuesday night to take part in a contest between teams that both had 0-5 records. Wixxlv's Weekly Winners, of the South Bend Tribune, had picked New l*rairic as the winner but the inev idablc finally happened, the Shamnxks exploded and overpowered the hapless Cougars 81-58. The entire Shamrock team placed and scored as well, as coach Glen Keel did all he could to keep the score dow n. I hey play ed the type of game the tans have wanted them to play all year — tough pressure defense and a running offense. Keel pulled the press after the half or the Sham nxks scry possibly would have gone over the ccnturv mark Todd Allsop got things going bv getting a tip-in at " 2" and Paul Stepanek answered immediately with a lay-in. Allsop got a rebound bucket. Jeff Martin got one from in close and one from the side while John Gouker drove into traffic and laid in a neat two-pointer. Brian Donathen made one free throw. Bruce Griffes two at 2 15 putting liberty out in front 13-2 It wasn't until I 58 when Jack Keldsen scor rd the (ougars second basket. Senior Griffcv made an IK footer and then promptly threw an allev <x>p pass to s’B" larry O’Connor As the quarter ended the 1 iberts press had given the ( ougars only points to IM for the Shamnxks I he Shamnxk machine got mov mg in the second period as thes continued to press and to score

with consistence From 521 until 1 3" the mights Shamrocks held New Prairie scoreless. Ihe( ou gars got sonic shots but did not go in and the I iberts boss had better position and grabbed rebound after rebound. Ness Prairie also got rattled and committed some foolish fouls. When the second stanza closed the Shamnxks were ahead by 31 points. 45-14 The locker nxim was estatic as thes savoured the sweet taste of having a com fortahle lead. Ihe coach sixin calmed his charges down and reminded them that thes had come from big deficits in three games this sear and the Cougars could tixi. I he Shamnx ks were comfortable in their lead and were able to show the fans some of their talents. All sop scored from tn close and Griffes got his own rebound for 2. A beautiful .dies -oop pass on an in bounds play gave Gouker another score. Donathen got a realls nice sc tx>p shortie before coac h Keel put in fisc new placers. The Cougars were able to score 13 points to five for I iberts before the pcrnxl ended with the Shamnxks in front M-40. Ilie final period was not what sou would call classic basketball as both teams committed turnosers and fouls. If the Shamnxks could have shot their free throws more accurately, thes probable would have hit at least 90 points When the final buzzer sounded, Griffes had I" points for game high honors. Martin 14 and Gouker 12. Martin had " rebounds and Griffes <> Bill Scoring paced the ( ougars with l< points followed bv Dean Kcnson and Paul Stepanek with 10 apiece I lie Shamroc ks plas South Bend Washington in the Hohdas I ournes at the A( ( on December 28.
