M.C. Marquette Tops Shamrocks 77-70 Saturday By Harry Griffey It was a long drive to Michigan City in nasty weather, but a good contingent of fans braved it all to watch the Shamrocks battle the Blue Blazers of Marquette. Things started out badly as the B-Team game got going about 30 minutes late. The first quarter of the varsity game was pretty even as far as the scoring went with Marquette outscoring Liberty 21-17. Both teams were shooting the bonus rather early in this quarter as the referees called a very tight game that hurt both teams. The next quarter started out with a whistle at 7:12 as Jeff Martin of North Liberty fouled classy Todd Pilarski who promptly made both shots. Pilarski got a rebouna bucket. John Pritz hit a fall-away jumper before Liberty's Bruce Griffey banged an 18 footer. Marquette's excellent floor general, Brian Torrijas, showed much skill as a ball handler and drew some fouls from eager Shamrocks. Todd Allsop made three of four free throws just before fiery Larry O'Connor, who is s’B'', sank an alley-opp basket. Pilarski and Jim Pritz had a couple each and Mark Vanderhagen and Griffey had one to bring the quarter to a close with the Blazers in front 34-30. In the third quarter there were 14 fouls whistled by the two fussy officials on both the teams. Three quick baskets by Pilarski and the Pritz brothers, Jim and John, put the Blazers ahead by 10. The Shamrock press started bothering them a little and it caused a few turnovers and of course, there were some fouls called by the eager officials. It was in this quarter that the Shamrocks managed to fight their way back to within one point and if they would have made a few more charity shots it might have been another story. The quarter ended with Marquette ahead 54-53. Period four found the Shamrocks taking a one point lead 59-58 on a hard driving lay-up by Larry O’Connor at 5:48. John Gouker boosted it to three points from the key before John Summers fouled Jim Pritz, w ho made both of his gift tosses. A steal by sophomore Joe Cunningham put the home team Blazers back in front again. From here on in the Shamrocks fouled trving to gain possession of the ball but coach Dick McGill’s boys made

most of the free throws to widen the lead. It was a gixxl ball game that was marred by a total of 55 fouls. North Liberty is now 0-3 and will face tough South Bend Clay Friday at home and Culver Community in a NSC clash Saturday. i Scoring Well Balanced i This game found both teams with i very balanced scoring as opposed to last year when Marquette's Todd Pilarski tossed in 42 points in a । close win by the Shamrocks. This , says something for scoring balance which the Michigan City team had. Pilarski had 21, but behind him was a 16 point performance by John Pritz, 14 more by Joe Cunningham and 11 for Brian Torrijas with 7, 6 and 2 totals behind that yet. The Shamrocks as well had good balanced scoring, they just needed a little more in this game. Jeff Martin had a dozen to pace the attack while Bruce Griffey and Gene Davis each had 11. Ron Price hit double figures with 10 and Allsop had nine, with the points being split well but just short of enough. B Team Records Third Win Paced by Danny Stevens 12 points, the Shamrocks B-Team won their third straight game against Michigan City Marquette 40-31. Stevens was espcially effective at the playmaker guard position that sent him to the free throw line 12 times and he hit on eight of those efforts. Rick Stephaniak scored 9 and Jeff Donathen 8.
