Shamrocks Slip In Second Half And Bow 62-46 By Harn Griffey They came expecting but left disappointed. That was the feeling of the large crowd that came to the North Liberty Shamrocks opening basketball game on Thanks giving eve. A new coach and practicalb a new team had brought the people into the Liberty gvm to watch the "new" edition of the Shamrock eagers. What they saw was a team with terrific depth, lots of enthusiam. but some of the same old traits that have hampered North I iberty teams of the past. Turnovers were very costly as were the fouls. North Liberty turned the ball over 20 times to the Satellites 15 and they committed 20 fouls to 11 for the visiting South Central. The Satellites cashed in at the free throw line by hitting 20 33 A lack of discipline showed as the Shamrocks showed a lack of patience in taking good shots. Because of their youth they seemed to want to hurry their shots and sometimes missed an open man. That wasn't the entire reason though as some very easy lay-ups were missed that should have been made. Six foot six inch center Todd Allsop has really come a long way since last season. He is much stronger and isn't afraid to move to the bucket in a crowd. With the overall depth and a few adjustments being made, 1 expect this years editiion of the Shamrocks to be one of the teams to beat in the area. Liberty controlled the opening tip and drew first blood when Mark Vanderhagen popped one in followed shortly by Gene Davis. Eric Wall and Terry Walter were the only starting Satellites to score in the opening quarter while the Shamrocks had four of theirs score. The quarter ended with the Shamrocks on top 20-14 and the fans gave their charges a standing ovation. In the second period the confidence of having already won two ball games began to come through for South Central. They didn't lose their cool and took a good seOMNSI PARTS For AB m^or Apowances kam n & imiMca MttSISEMKt WALKERTON 586-2582 Bring Model Number Or Old pan

lection of shots to go ahead .it 2:24 of the period, a lead that they never lost. The bottom fell out tor the Sham rocks in the third stanza as they onh hit on two field goals and one tree throw b\ Allsop. The youngsters here began to play barnsard type of basketball — run down and shoot whether they had anyone in position to rebound or not. It wasn't the type of playing the fans expected to see from a team that is loaded with so much talent. The fourth stanza was much the same as the third as far as the cold shooting Shamrocks were concerned. the only difference being that the Shamrocks fouled more. They were beaten by a well-coached team, but I'm sure that coach Glen Keel will get his hoys back on track as they have their conference opener Eriday night against Jimtown and then travel to Michigan City Marquette Saturday night. This reporter feels certain that if the fans give Keel a chance that he has the ability to make the Shamrocks a winner. B-Team Wins A Thriller The North Liberty B-Team won a thriller 51-50. paced by non-starter Jeff Donathan's 14 and Dan Steven's 10 points. The B-Team too has some depth and with more experience could also have an impressive season. With winter comes the close of many hunting seasons and the end of most water sports. Once ice forms on our favorite fishing lakes, we witness the coming out of the Fish Eaters Fish Eaters are a different breed of fishermen. Their equipment sei dom costs more than SSO. but what they lose in fancy paraphernalia they more than make up in the number of fish they catch. Their name. Fish Eaters, is de rived from the fact that they fish for the sole purpose of getting fish to eat; the fight or sport of the catch is seldom considered. I he excitement of ice fishing has to be in the eating. Consider spending six hours sitting in a wixxlen box, your back to a 25 below zero chill factor w ind, jerking a minute pole with an even smaller bait through a hole in the ice. Even the ever-present jug of schnapps can't dull the pain. So why do thev do it? Simple. It is the best time of year to harvest pan fish and these pan fish arc at their very best for eating. W'hen the Fish Eaicr gets home, thaws out and cleans the catch, then and only then does the enjoy ment begin. I haven't tasted every fish that swims, but my consider able sampling leaves no choice but to call bluegill caught through the ice as the finest eating. I he very best catching is almost always as soon as the ice is safe to fish. More fish arc caught then and they are usually bigger fish I hat time of year is just around tlu corner. Ice fishing d<x*s have with it considerable risk. If you plan to be out on the first ice. take these precautions. 1 Don’t go alone. 2 Take a 50-ftxtt piece of rope. 3 Don't sit right next to your buddy. 4 Don't ever take the chance of failing through As gixxl as the fish may taste, it’s not worth risking your life.
