Falcons Fall To Big Talented Clay Team 65-47 The John Glenn Falcons went to the home court of a very big and talented South Bend Clav team Friday evening and really, as expected, came home with loss number two in the young season. It was the first game for the Colonials and they really got off on the right foot in this season as they used their size and experience to the utmost advantage to hit their first eight shots and lead all the way in a contest that found the Falcons completely outmanned. The final score was 65-47 but the Colonials completely controlled the game with the domination and at no time used their two big men, 6’7” Joe Meyer and 6’B” John Roden together. The Falcons, although never really in the contest, once again never said die and gave new coach Jim Waller 100 per cent. They also cut down on their turnovers from the opening game considerably and Clay really controlled the boards against the shorter Falcons. Both teams were playing without a starter as junior Craig Ochs sustained a sprained ankle in practice and had to miss the Friday game while Clay had a potential starter in Mark Tarner, out with a bad back. As stated. Clay hit their first 8 shots but tour of them were in the hoop before Glenn got on the board and with a team as dominating as the Colonials, an 8-0 start is something that is hard to overcome.

They had no trouble going “over” the Glenn defense and their big men just almost scored at will from under. The 6’7” Meyer had a nifty six of seven from the field; the b’B” Roden, five of 11; Tom Butler, at 6'4”, hit seven of 10; and Dave Miller, a mere 6’3”, had eight of 11 from the floor to give the Colonials all the fire power they needed. Both teams used their benches freely as coach Waller plans on using all his players to both find a combination that he is satisfied with and also to give them all plenty of playing time to help prepare them for the later season and tournament action. He hopes to have depth at all spots and 10 boys ready to go at all times with this style of using all his players. Clay moved from their early 8-0 start, to an 18-8 first quarter lead as the Falcons were down, but not out. By halftime, the Colonials had increased this lead steadily and went down at halftime leading by 13 although they had the score about doubled on the Falcons most of the time. It was 31-18 at the main intermission. Clay continued to control the tempo and play in the entire game and after stretching the lead to 45-28 with a late burst in the third period, they saw the hustling Falcons cut the lead down considerably in the final quarter. Although not really threatening to catch the Colonials, a pressure on the ball and good hustle on defense all over forced the Colonials into quite a few turnovers and the Falcons did cut the margin to 12 points with just under five minutes left to play. However, the Clay
dominance took over again and they outscored Glenn 20-19 in a more wide open final stanza to win 65-47. Clay's scoring was balanced, paced by the 16 points of Dave Miller while he had double figure support from Butler, Meyer and Roden with 14. 13 and 12 respectively. Glenn was led by Bob Muncie who had a good shooting night over the big Colonials w ith 12 points on five baskets in nine attempts and a pair of free throws. Tom Moore, seeing his first action of the year after a late football injury, had 11 points including five of five from the foul line, and Kris Tuttle had 10. all on baskets. The Glenn team shooting was forced to go over the big men and a team total of 20 of 54 was recorded but they did hit seven of eight from the line. Clay shot a hot 30 of 56 with their percentages being larger than that until late outside shooting pulled it down. They made just half of their 10 free throw attempts. B-Team Wing Again The Falcon B-Team won their second game in two starts as they dropped the Colonial reserves by a close 38-35 score in a hotly contested ball game. Jeff Tinkey and Rick Vancza paced the winners with 12 and 10 respectively. Box Score Clay fg ft fta p Guy 10 0 1 D. Miller 8 0 12 Meyer 6 12 2 Butler 7 0 0 2 V.
