North Liberty Ends Season On Winning Note The North Liberty Shamrocks ended a frustrating football season on a happv note last Wednesday night as they topped the LaVille Lancers in a game that found the second halt played in a hard rain. The conditions were much easier to take as the Shamrocks roared back with three straight touchdowns in the second half to turn a 6-0 first half deficit into victory The win was only the third of the season for the Shamrocks who finis’; with a 3-7 record but have played better fcxTtball by tar than the record indicates. It has not been a season the breaks came their way and with injuries entering in rivht at the off-

set to several games just being one play away from victory, the Green and White of Bill Farrell really deserved the closing win. The early scheduling was due to the fall vacation on Thursday and Friday and the threatening weather cer-

tainly didn’t encourage the fans to turn out to see the two winlcss teams in conference play. The first half didn’t find the Shamrocks coming up with any offense to speak of and their steady defense once again did a good job. However, a Shamrock mistake led to the game's first score as the two teams had been trading possession of the ball when the play move to La Ville’s advantage as far as field position goes mainly on a blocked punt by Chris Cox for the Lancers. Even though they didn’t score, they punted back to the Shamrocks deep in their own territory and the punt was fumbled and was covered by Larry Martin at the North Liberty 8 yard line. It only took two plays for them to score as Greg Rutzen banged over from about seven yards out. A try for a two point conversion failed when a pass was no good, but the Lancers had the first points on the board, 6-0 The first half ended that way and before the action started in the second half, the mist turned into a full fledged rain. However, this didn't stop the Shamrocks who came out smokin’ in the second half. On the second play from scrimmage after receiving the kick. Tim Shreve broke free and legged it all the way home from 81 yards away to tie the score. A pass also failed for the Shamrocks in an effort to gain two extra points, but they were back in the game and the big play gave them momentum. As is usually the case, this carried over to the defense, who hadn't needed a lot of reasons to play good all year. They stopped the Lancers and after getting the ball back, the Shamrocks moved the ball freely again, only to be stopped deep in Lancer territory by a pass interception. However. LaVille returned the turnover as the field and playing conditions were not getting any

। better and Steve Shonkwiler recov- . cred a Lancer fumble at the LaVille 27. Five plays were needed on this drive to take the lead as junior quarterback. John Goukcr. finishing the season after an earlier broken arm. was successful on a quarI terback sneak from one vard out. • This time a two point conversion i was added as Jeff Martin pounded • the ball in to give the Shamrocks a I 14-6 lead as the game was now in I the final stanza. Once again the defense stopped a LaVille drive this time using the pass interception to put a halt to the Lancers forward progress. It was Shonkwiler who picked off this Tim Dykstra aerial and the home team on a foreign field had the ball 1 at their own 3b. It was a64 yard drive that was nothing but sheer ground power and also it was using up a lot of valuable time as Martin and Shreve were the main ball carriers in this sustained drive. Martin put the six on the board as he powered his way in from three yards out and only 3:48 remained when another try for two extra points was missed, but that didn’t seem very important now. It turned out to be very important as play progressed as the Lancers, after receiving the next kickoff, turned to the air to try and score fast as they needed two scores to get back in the game. It did come fast . . , just three plays fast . , . as Dykstra passed three times and hit three times. He hit Larry Martin for 27, Cox for 10 and Martin again for the final 28 to put them in the end zone. This time Cox caught a Dykstra pass and all of a sudden it was 20-14 with 2:55 still to play. Things got a little tight for the Shamnxks on their next possession as another Shamrock fumble was covered by the Lancers with 1:17 still to be played. However, playing 100 per cent against the pass and big play, the Shamrocks

picked off a Dykstra pass on the first down and Gouker intercepted to give the Lancers the ball back and let them run out the clock.
