Falcons Defense Sparkles In 15-7 Win Over Knox Ihe feeling among the mans coaches in football is that sou have to have a gixxl defense to win and the offense will come after This could not be more true than it was Fridas night when the John Glenn Falcons assured themselves of another winning football season as an overworked defense time and time again stopped a Knox offense while a sluggish Falcon offense prosided them with just one touchdown and a two point conversion until the final seconds of the game. The big 15" win was the sixth in nine tries for the Falcons this sear, matching their best previous win total with a big meeting coming against a strong Jimtwon team this Fridas night. Knox's record slipped to 2" with the loss despite the fact the Redskins appear to have the basic ingredients of a g<xxi football team. After the opening kick was received by Glenn and returned by Tom Moore to the Falcon 40 card line, a first dow n w as gathered and then things began to go bad for the Falcons on offense, including an injurx to their big gun. Moore on a third down plax in which he was helped from the field faxoring a knee. Add to this it was now a punting situation and he has been the only Falcon punter ail season. Freshman Jeff Tinkey got a short kick off that did take a faxorable Falcon bounce, but the Redskins were still readx to set it in play first and 10 from their ow n 27. The Falcon defense was geared to stop a passing attack as the pregame feeling was that quarterback Steve Bradley could throxx the bail. This had a tendency to open it up a little more for the running game and backs Vince Jacobs and Steve Mullins took adxantage of this. A

13 play drive, all on the ground, was the result with Jacobs earning six times. Mullins fixe and Bradley keeping it himself twice to grind out fixe first downs and then the touchdown this came with 2:35 left in the first quarter and Knox's placekicker. Tony Snyder hooted the extra point that hit the unrmht but bounced through for a quick 7-0 lead Glenn was still unable to gonerate much offense and kicked again, this time a xery short 8 yard punt that bounced backwards after a high kick How ex er. Bradley tried to pass clear across the field on first down from the Falcon 49 sard line and Bob Muncie picked off the pass and returned it 34 yards for the Falcons giving them a first and 10 at the Knox 40. One more first down was gained before the Falcons were stopped on the Knox 21. The Redskins started another drive that picked up three first downs and thex were moving well on the ground when another decision to pass ended up in Greg Brovoid's hands, giving the Falcons two interceptions in two passes for Knox and stopping them well in Falcon territory However. Brovoid returned this interception to the Falcon 41 and on first down. Muncie, placing m place of Moore, ripped off 12 vards and after Mark Izdepski plowed for three. Mike Shenenberger took the bail through the right side of his line and cut back to gam some open space and then outran the defense for a44 card touchdown gallop A key pass from Brovoid to a waiting Rod Miller made it 8-" with 4:03 left in the half. Knox again moved the bail well, after a kex clipping call on a long kickoff return pushed them back to their own 19 yard line. However, with Jacobs doing some fine running and Bradley hitting one 12 yard pass and another short one. they moved to the Falcon 30 but were forced to throw on every dow n in an effort to move the ball and stop the clock both. Three incomplete passes in a row after the short gainer, found some gcxxl work by the defensive backs stopping Knox well into Falcon territory again, leaving the score 8-~ at halftime despite 12 Knox first downs to three for Glenn, a total offense of lb to the Falcons 88 and a total of 38 offensive plavs to Glenn's 21 The second half was more of the same. A short kickoff bv Glenn was downed at the Knox 44 and they set their offense in motion again, moving for three more first downs, picking up a lot of yards before an over anxious lineman jumped early on a key fourth down play from the Glenn seven yard

line. Backing up five vards to the 12. thex tried a 29 yard field goal which just hung wide to the right bv the side-winding kicking Snyder and Glenn maintained its slim one point lead. 1 he Falcons did manage one first down in their possession on a play that Shenenberger broke again, only to have a clipping call way Ix-hind the plav pull the ball back to eliminate the great big play. A punt was necessary however, as this drive was not sustained and Moore returned to kick pushing the Redskins back to their ow n 26. Once again the Falcons defense held, but a roughing the kicker penahv kept the possession m Knox's favor only to have the defense once more stop the hosts, this time coming on the first play of the fourth quarter. Coach Hostraw ser sent Moore back in on offense in an effort to sustain a drive and control the clock, but the Falcons were unable to get another first down in the game and only two good kicks by Moore, one of 39 yards and another of 43 kept the Redskins backed up. Each time now the Falcon defense came up with the big play to contain the Redskins who also got a big break after punting when the Falcons fumbled giving Knox a first and 10 on the Glenn 25 with over six minutes left in the game. However, a key plav was a Tinkey sack of quarterback Bradlev to force the Redskins to throw and the Falcons again held to stop the drive at the 23 On Knox's next possession, thex did get one first down putting the ball in plav from their own 35 with 2:59 left in the game, but another sack and some more good defensivework stopped this drive at their own 35. Glenn was simply trying to run out the time but on a big fourth and 5 from the 30. Shenenberger broke through the bunched up line, found daylight and raced for his second score of the night. Izdepski kicked the point and ironically. the touchdown gave the Redskins an opportunity to get back in the game where a first down would simple have ended it However, all doubt was removed when a short kick was handled bv a lineman and freshman Mike F.lkm stripped him of the ball and Steve .Morns fell on it to give Glenn possession at the Knox 49. One play was needed to kill the clock and wrap up the 15-" victory . Shenenberger had his best night as he carried the ball 10 times for 118 yards, getting 108 of these on three big plays. That was the bulk of the Falcons offense, but the defense once more rose to the occassion as they have all year except for the New Prairie game two weeks earlier when they simply were outplayed the whole game.
