Falcons Topple South Central For sth Win • The John Glenn Falcons traveled to South Central Fridav night and used both some luck and some good football to bring home a 21-12 victor), thus assuring themselves ot at least an even record this season. Ihew in had to be encouraging to the coaching staff of John H strawser after a rather flat per formance the week prior, as the Falcons bounced back to continue their success this season I heir record is now 5 1 with two road games remaining, this Frida) at Knox and the season finale against the Jimtown Jimmies South C entral's rec ord slipped to 4 4 w ith this loss JG Statistics SC 10 First Downs 12 168 Rushing 95 72 Passing 145 5 Passes Attempted 17 2 Passes (ompleted 8 0 Had Intercepted 2 4" Return Yards 19 5 Punts 3 35 Average Yards 32 2 Fumbles 4 1 Fumbles Lost 2 50 Yards Penalized 0 59 Offensive Plays 54 The game started with Glenn kicking off to the host Satellites and after getting one first down, the) were forced to punt to Glenn. The Falcons offense was really sputtering in the earl) game and could not gain a first down until late in the second quarter. However, after kicking the ball back to South C entral, the defense once again rose to the occasion as Steve Morris picked off an Eric Wall pass and returned it down the sidelines, being stop-

ped seven cards short of the goal line, giving Glenn a first and goal at the T lorn Moore hit for four. Greg Brocold kept it for two and then Moore bolted over to put the Falcons on the board. Brovoid then hit Morris with the extra points on a pass, giving Glenn an 8-0 lead. Once again the Falcons defense stopped the Satellites after the kickoff as an eight card gain and a face mask penalty put the Satellites well into Falcon territory only to have a third down play result in a tumble with Ron Shortt covering the loose ball. However, once again thee were unable to move and punted back to the host team on the last play of the first quarter. The punt was a very good one by Moore, rolling dead at the South Central nine card line, but for the next 5 minutes and 24 seconds the Satellites looked like a real polished machine as they started right out on a sustained drive of 12 plays to chew up the 91 yards for a score. Only once on this drive did the Falcon defense meet them at the line and stop them, that coming after they had moved to the Glenn 15. but it was just a matter of time until Wall pushed it over from one yard out. However, a run for the extra points failed and Glenn held an 8-6 lead with 6:36 left in the first half. In this drive the Satellites had four plays of over 10 cards, one a 31 card pass completion from Wail to Mike Vick, and also three rushes for big cards, two be Wall for 12 and 18 cards and another be Bill Phelan for 15 cards. The two teams then traded punts after neither could pick up a first down. I his set the stage for a couple of bang-bang plays which brought both sides to their feet at one time or the other. After Glenn received the ball after the second punt, a halfback option pass from Moore found end Rod Miller all by

himself and even though he had to stop and wait for the long wobbly aerial, he still was far enough behind the defense that he cut back to free himself and scamper in the end zone, a total of 59 yard overall. Mark l/depski kicked the extra point and it was Glenn 15. South Central 6 with just 2:50 left on the clock and one would think that this one big play for Glenn would send them in with a good lead at halftime. However. Wall had other ideas. After the kickoff, an incomplete ’ pass on first down was followed 1 with another long bomb, this time to a w ide open Vick w ho gathered it in in stride and it was no contest, this play covering 5” yards and 1 coming just 36 seconds after the long Glenn scoring pass. Once again a try for two points failed 1 when a pass was incomplete, so the ' Falcons still held a three point lead. The action wasn't quite over yet. ’ with Glenn finally getting a first 1 down and then turning the ball over ’ to South Central with time almost out. but despite three real deep men. Wall found John Phelan wide open with another long bomb only ' to have the halfback drop the ball 1 all by himself. One more play killed the half and the stats at halftime were heavily in South Central's favor except for that one intercepted pass and the 15-12 score. They had run 36 offensive plays to Glenn s 22 and had gathered nine first downs to one for the Falcons. What ever coach Hostraw ser told his boys at halftime, it must have sunk in for they came out the second half a different team. They took the kickoff on their own 34 and moved it forward after a first down onlv to fumble at the midfield stripe. However, the defense once again was up to the occasion and forced a punt, giving Glenn the ball at their own 18. From here they started an 18 play drive that had only one play over nine yards, that a 13 yard pass from Brovoid to

• Miller early in the drive. The rest was l/depski. Moore and Mike Shencnberger with Brovoid run- • ning just one keeper. Shenenberger got the call from two yards out and dove in to cap the drive with i just :15 showing on the clock in the i third quarter. A try for two points ' failed on a pass, but it was 21 12 at , this point and the Falcons had disI played the fact they were ready to plav ball m this half. They followed up this score with a short kick that Morris recovered after it bounced off an up man for the Satellites. This was the last plav of the quarter and it looked like another score might be coming onlv to have the Falcons get shorted a down on their second scries of downs and turn the ball over just inches short of a first down on a third down play that was errantly recorded as a fourth down when the down box was flipped on a procedure call in that set. It made no difference in the outcome as the defense battled back and even though they allowed a few yards late in the game, they protected against the big play and were able to take home the victory. Moore was again the big rusher for Glenn as he totaled 75 yards tn 18 carries to go along with his touchdown pass to Miller. The Falcons gathered 168 yards on the ground with 134 coming in the second half. The Scoring JOHN GLENN: lorn Moore. I vard run: PAI: Steve Morris, pass from Greg Brovoid SOUTH CENTRAL: Eric Wall.
