Shamrocks Top South Central 20-8 Saturday Ihe North Liberty Shamrocks spotted South Central s Satellites the first touchdown of the game and then combined a good ground attack and a solid defense to throttle their guests the rest of the way and wrap up an exciting 20-8 homecoming victory Saturday afternoon. After the Satellites crossed the goal line on a 57 yard scamper after a broken play, they were just not able to penetrate the Shamrocks defense the rest of the day. Add to this a very strong ground attack to aid the dominating defense and the North Liberty boys were in complete control for the last three quarters of play. The win was only the second in seven starts for North Liberty, a team which has found bad luck and the lack of the big play when needed keeping it from very possibly reversing this record this season. They have not been blown out of any game and only a late 19 point last period by the Culver Military Academy let the spread of points be in double figures in any of their losses. South Central, who got off to a good start this season, slipped to a 4-3 mark with this loss. Just under five minutes remained in the first quarter and the visitors from LaPorte County upped their lead to 8-0 with a two point conversion run by Rod Lute. As it resulted, this was the better pari of the Satellite offense for the dav as the good year-long defensive performance by the Shamrocks, again found things going their way as they time and time again stopped the South Central offensive game. Add to this, the Shamrocks came back with one first half score and then dominated the second half to win easily . The Shamrocks first touchdown followed another exchange of possession and a drive was climaxed with Jeff Martin scampering 34 yards around end for the score. The Shamrocks had been using their big fullback. Mark Romwalter. up the middle to help loosen up the South Central defense. Martin's touchdown came with 9:30 to play in the half and after thr conversion failed, the Shamrocks still trailed by two. 8-6. The rest of the first half was trading of possession with neither club making a serious scoring threat. The second half was all North Liberty. Taking the opening kickoff. the Shamrocks sustained a drive that used up half the quarter, grinding out the yardage on the ground to go all the way with Romw alter plowing over from four

Again the Shamrocks were unable to convert and the score was 12-8 in the Shamrocks favor with 6:04 left in the third period. The final score of the game and the one that iced it up against the visitors breaking a big play, was made with just 4:17 left in the game. Romwalter again carried the pigskin into the end zone, this time bucking over from one year out to climax another drive. This time a two point conversion was successful as Tim Shreve ran the ball into pay dirt to raise the total to 20-8. One of the big turning points in the game came right after the Shamrocks had scored their first time, the defense providing the spark that turned it all around. Returning the kickoff to just inside North Liberty territory, a 15 yard penalty on the field was followed bv one on the bench, giving the Satellites a first and 10 at the North Liberty 19 However, the defense stopped the visitors on fourth down to protect their goal line and change the momentum at this point.
