Although Commended students scored slightly below the level required for Merit Program participants who were named Semifinalists and who will continue in the competition for Merit Scholarships to be awarded in 1978. each Commended student has demonstrated exceptional academic promise. A spokesman for NMSC stated that the corporation believes “the high standing of Merit Program Commended students is an attainment that deserves their public recognition, because the nation as well as these students will be benefited by continued educational and personal des elopment of their talents. ’ ’ To increase their opportunities for college admission and financial aid NMSC has offered each Commended student an opportunits to have identifying information sent by the corporation to two higher education institutions selected by the student. In addition, NMSC makes it possible for regionally accredited U. S. colleges and universities to receive home addresses for Commended students, on a cost basis, so that an institution may

contact any of these promising young men and women directly. It is hoped that recognition of the Commended students in each year’s Merit Program will serve as an encouragement to able youth and will assist them in obtaining whatever information and assistance they may need to pursue their educational plans. To Honor Dr. Fullmer At Indiana Univ. Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana, will honor Dr. Harold M Fullmer. BS 42, DDS 44. by conferring upon him this year s Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr. Fullmer is an internationally recognized researcher, educator, author. and practitioner. Currently the director of the Institute of Dental Research at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Dr. Fullmer is credited with the discovery of oxytalan connective tissue fibers in periodontal membranes of man and animals. He and Dr. William Gibson, also

Dr. Fullmer has taught at Loyala and Gerogetown Universities, and was, for 17 years, the principal investigator at the National Institute of Dental Research. Today, aside from his research responsibilities at the University of Alabama. Dr. Fullmer is an associate dean of the School of Dentistry, a professor of both pathology and denistry. and senior scientist at the University 's C ancer Research and I raining Program. He is a respected national con suitant and a demonstrated leader He is a past president of the Inter national and American Associa lions for Dental Research, and a past chairman of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dental Section. Active in professional organizations. Dr. Fullmer is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Oral Pathology. He holds memberships in the American Dental Association, the American College of Dentists, the International Association (or Den-

tal research, and the Histochemical Society to name just a few. Dr. Fullmer’s achievements have not gone without notice. He is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon. the C. Victor Vignes Honor Society, the Blue Key Honor Society, and the recipient of both a Fulbright and Isaac Schour Memorial Award. Married and the father of two daughters, Dr. Fullmer has published over 1 (X) research and position articles, and is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Oral Pathology. He also is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Cutaneous Pathol ogy. and a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of I issue Reactions. Dr. Fullmer graduated from North Liberty High School in 1935 and his mother. Mrs. Rachel Full mer, still resides in North Libertv. Truly deserving of this award.
