< NOW IS THE TIME h mav seem that it was just a tew weeks ago that the summer vacation started, but at any rate the schools are now going back in session and with it comes the unofficial end of the summer season although we hope the summer weather sticks around a little bit longer. The start of school changes the lite styles and habits of all who have children in school and also touches many who do not. simply through the change it makes tn h v ing habits. With the start of school many things will be heard, both from a common sense standpoint and from a commercial end as well. The "Back-To-School pitch is obvious in the retailing business as the merchants make this their big pitch for a while. You will also hear a great deal about safety the kids are going to school again, drive carefully, etc. These pitches, plus many others, are almost so common that one tends to overlook them and yet, both from a realistic standpoint of a retail merchant and certainly from a safety standpoint for ail school-age children. especially the young, they should be taken seriously. There is no tragedy worse than one involving a young child. However, one message, or warning, whatever one may call it. never comes at this time ... it comes more at the end of the school year rather than the start and really the start is the proper time for such a message. That is to the students themselves, especially the high school age student who may be reaching the end of the required years of education with their lifetime ahead, whether it be more school or moving on into the world as an adult through occupations, family life, etc The message about what to do with your lives as far as school is concerned comes around commencement time, when the school year is over. Now is really the time an individual should put the time and thought towards their future as far as school is concerned. The courses chosen, the study habits, the participation in extra curricular activities is made now for this school year and not after it is over, wishing it was done differently. Little do most children, especially the teen-agers, with all their interests in outside activities, realize now what valuable and enjoyable days the schools days are. Never again will most establish friends the way they do in school. Never again will they have so much opportunity offered to them without giving material things in return. Never again will everyone be helping them make decisions, from parents to teachers to coaches to school officials they might not even be familiar with. Never again will they pass through a period in their life that they can enjoy and profit by more than the years of school life. The start of school each year brings a lot of things to a lot of people, but the start of school for the students brings to them opportunities that will never be offered again. Whether one chooses to study hard in pursuit of a career, or one chooses to loaf through and do what is necessary might not seem like much today, but sometime in the future this will all tell. And we don't mean to imply that one needs to tie themselves to the books this is the time that all phases of grow ing up and maturing can be developed. Participation in activities whether it be football or a Spanish Club, whether it be playing in the band or serving on the student council, all these things add to the well-rounded opportunity offered to a person m school. These years are the precious years . . they will disappear soon enough and it is up to you to take advantage of them while they are here for you. WHEN—
