A REAL ASSET TO OUR AREA The addition of the Potato Creek Recreation Area to the Northern Indiana scene, has been a great addition for young and old alike. The park is now in full operation with still sonic odds and ends to be pulled together as it matures, but it is providing a beautiful place for everyone to enjoy. The park is running a schedule of activities that are designed for all from nature walks to bike hikes to sessions on edible plants, etc. These activities are listed in this week's issue of “The Independent-News’’ and we hope to be bringing them to you each week as the summer recreation season continues. The park has been receiving very good response as the picnic areas and the beach along with the boat rentals, etc., are all being used regularly by the public. The camp grounds has proven to be another very popular place as the big camping boom of the past few years has extended to a place such as this where campers can find very complete surroundings at a very moderate rate. Add all these things together and the Potato Creek State Recreation Area has something for everyone . . . not just the hikers, the swimmers or fishermen, but with the easy to handle trails, the bike routes, the modern picnic and camping areas, the beautiful beach and so on, this dream of many years has become a reality that the entire area can be very proud of. bMI when. ■ Over the past few years, all of us have witnessed vocational education s emergence as a major academic discipline. Long education s ugly step-child, vocational education was relegated to cast-off buildings. leftover financing and educational hand-me-downs of all types Today, secondary and postsecondary vocational education is one bright shiny spot of growth in the midst of an educational community despairing over declining enrollments. and escalating public apprehension. Will success spoil a system that was gained through a lean, hardnosed approach by its supporters but that now enjoys status and funding'? Years of less than lavish treatment of vocational programs had the effect of bringing forth a cadre of vocational educators that scrambled hard for acceptance and struggled fiercely for funding on the basis of the performance of the programs they operated — as judged by satisfactory employment records These educators were quick to use everything at hand in the community as a part of their teaching method and their curriculum As a group our vocational educators have been goal-oriented, unafraid to call upon the resources of the community for program support and wholly willing to tackle any new challenge they might see As a result the public began to recognize the true job of education that was going on in noisy metal shops, drafty mechanics labs and in off-the-beaten-track vocational class-

rooms. In our vocational classes, the public saw education, service and an open willingness to prove that education can meet the needs of both the individual student and the community in which the student lives. While I served in the Indiana General Assembly, I began to see growing receptiveness to increased financing of vocational programs — as a result. I witnessed vocational education beginning to move to the forefront of funding pitches made to the legislature. Today, many of Indiana s newest school facilities are vocational centers. and a greatly increased portion of the total education dollar is earmarked for vocational education The system is sound, it is working and it is producing tangible benefits throughout the state. Our job has to be one of not allowing vocational education s hard-won success to cause us to turn away from the types of things that vocational educators did when they were fighting for every dollar they could get and every scrap of acceptance they could gam Even though our buildings are generally newer, and far better supported, the attitude of vocational education s supporters must continue to be that same attitude of aggressive service to student and community that they had when they had to fight for every dollar they could get If this same attitude doesn t survive, vocational education will have been spoiled by the success it sought, and gained
