Guys & Dolls Opens At Canterbury “Guys and Dolls", the musical fable about the underworld of tinhorn gamblers and sentimental chorus-girls of New York’s Times Square that delighted theatre-go-ers and won the Drama Critic’s Award as the best musical comedy in the 50's will open the 1978 Canterbury Summer Theatre season on June 28 running through July Bth. Walter Brody and Lisa Jo Swanson will be seen in two of the leading roles, that of Nathan Detroit, the harassed operator of a floating crap-game and Adelaide, his "doll’’ who has been engaged to him for 14 years and has developed a permanent psychosomatic cold out of anxiety about getting "that plain little band of gold" from him eventually. Neil Bremmer and Mary Ellen Virgil will be seen in two of the other major roles, those of Sky Masterson, so named because the sky is the limit to his betting, and Sarah Brown, the missionary lass who tries to save the souls of all the sinners in the Neon-lit area. Others who will portray pungent characters from Damon Runyon’s famous stories about deadbeats and sharpers of the Great White Way, will be Jeff Coopwood. Tracy Wilt. Steven Grandelius. and Jim Montgomery. Included in this gallery are such beloved rogues from Runyon's collection of underworld denizens as Nicely-Nicely Johnson. Benny Southstreet. Harry the Horse. Big Julie and Angie the Ox. Nate Migliore, Michigan City’s own. plays Big Julie. Walter Kerr, drama critic of the New York Herald Tribune calls Guys and Dolls "one of the most exhilarating muisicals every written. Brooks Atkinson of the Times says "that not even "South Pacific", "Carousel". "Brigadoon”, or "Oklahoma” were written with more skill and finish than Guys and Dolls". The presentation at the Canterbury, under the auspices of the Festival Players Guild, is being directed by Ricardo Gutierrez; raffish settings and costumes designed by Rick Rose, Stephen Richards and Peggy Dunn. Performances begin at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings. Saturday shows at 6:15 and 9:30 p.m. Matinees on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $4 on week day evenings; $4.50 week ends. $3.25 matinees. Mrs. Bowers reported on the recent county council meeting. The Jubilee will be the same as the recent one and in the same place. It was decided not to have a Fair booth. Cards were signed for those that were ill. Those attending the show at Canterbury Theatre will meet at the community building at 12:30 on August 2. Mrs. Catherine Hostatler. Mrs. Richard Hesters and Mrs. Lloyd Thomas. Mrs. Knowlton and Mrs. Dreessen reported on reservations made at the Cimarron Steak House for dinner after the show. The birthday song was sung for Mrs. Marion Robison, Mrs. John Kepcha and Miss Ethel Bierly. Contests were conducted by the hostesses, Mrs. Robison and Mrs. Thomas. Prize winners were Mrs. Bowers and Mrs. Floyd Dipert. Attendance awards were received by Mrs. Laura Malstaff and Mrs. Bowers. Guests were Tenna and Rodney Anderson. The July meeting will be a picnic at the home of Mrs. Sidney Smith
