Old Glory’s Day June 14 June 14. is the birthday of the Flag of the United States. It is truly “Old Glory 's’’ day and each year the nation celebrates the birth of the shining symbol of its unity, endeavors and aspirations. Let us associate the flags of our historic past with our various personalities. There are flags that have special meanings, just as people have different feelings and meanings in their everyday life. Each of you can find a Flag to coicide with your “Fellings for the Day’’. 1. What is supposed to be the oldest flag in existence and may be seen at the Bedrord. Mass. Public Library , was carried by the Minute Men at the Concord fight, April 19. 1775. It has an inscription which means “Conquer or Die”. How many times is a person driven by impulse to conquer someone or something only to find his destiny — Death? 2. The flag used in South Carolina (1775) had a yellow ground with a coiled rattlesnake in the center and beneath it the words. “Don't Tread On Me” — Here we think of the person who is always on the defensive ready to strike out at the world, with or without reason. 3. It is supposed that, in the Rag of 1777, the thirteen stars

were arranged in the form of a circle. It was suggested by General Washington that the circle signify that no one state was superior to another. We know people who are symbolic of this flag, because of their feelings of inferiority and vice-versa. 4. A Black Flag had been the chosen ensignia for pirates, and it was often decorated with the emblem of a skull and crossbones. Here you find yourself thinking of certain groups, clubs, organizations and cults who show defiance against society or the word we so ofter hear, the “Establishment”. 5. A White Flag indicates Peace and is used as a flag of truce when it is desireable that hostilities should be suspended — white is for Purity. 6. The Yellow Flag is used on hospitals and is a sign of quarantine. We have worn a yellow flag many times w hen we want to quarantine ourselves for personal privacy. just a moment to ourselves. 7. The White Flag displaying a Red Cross is the standard adopted by the Red Cross Society whose work is to help the wounded and the dying. Haven’t you been a Red Cross Flag to your family and friends many times, or even a stranger if they needed your help? 8. A Flag at half-mast is always a sign of mourning. There are so many memories that run through our mind that sadden us so and many times we encounter some traumatic experience that makes us

fly our flag at half-mast. 9. “Flags of False Colors" is a term applied to colors which do not belong to the vessel using them. In war. False Colors are employed to lure the enemy within gunshot. It is, however, considered dishonorable to use distress signals for the purpose of enticing the foe to destruction. We unfortunately do know some people who are phony and dishonest often trying to absorb us into the crowd under the flag of false colors. 10. The American Flag, one of the oldest standards in existence and one of the most reverently studied because it stands for Liberty and Equality. The people of every nation are learning it, to them the American Flag is the symbol of Hope and Happiness. It is not like so many others, the emblem of tyranny and oppression. It is the "Flag of the Free" in every sense of the word. Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, called it the "Flower of Liberty". It has been called “Old Glory", this being just a few names given our Grand Old Flag, a symbol of strength. Do these Flags not remind us of many personalities we come in contact with each day of our lives? Each making up this great country we live in. (Excerpts from a Literature Series published in 1911.) Our Country has flown under many flags since colonial days and many poems and songs have been written about our flag. We must show and teach proper respect for our flag. Is your flag in presentable and respectable condition? Or is it ragged and torn, a disgrace to be flown? If just dirty, have it cleaned, otherwise, have it replaced. Fly your flag proudly and attend the Flag Day Program, June 14. at the downtown Urey Park at 12:00 noon.
