I o meet the standards of manufacturing and of the environment, coal must be cleaned. Mining and processing coal create large amounts of fine-sized coal and non-coal materials that are difficult to clean. Until the recent energy crisis, reclaiming coal from waste materials was not feasible. Much of the fine material was mixed with water and pumped to a waste storage area. Indiana s coal industry

Studies by the Indiana Geological Survey have shown that coal waste contains coal of high thermal value. Reclaiming coal from wastes would help our energy effort and might remove potential pollutants from the environment.
