But for many Hoosiers, especially those with wells and septic systems, water conservation mav be a necessity, particularly during droughts or when the ground is exceptionally wet. Ihe average person uses as much as 60 gallons of water per day. I his amount can be reduced, says Sue Badenhop. Extension housing specialist at Purdue University. For instance, an individual uses 50 to 75 percent less water in taking a shower instead of a tub bath. I his amount can be reduced even further by limiting the time the shower is running to two minutes or less. (Turn the shower off while you are soaping and turn it on again to rinse.) Io relax stretch, massage or exercise instead of show ering. Encourage children to change into play clothes after schix>l so that school and play clothes can be worn several times between washings. II possible, close the bathtub drain during a shower and use the water to flush the toilet. Wash dishes or clothing only when you have a full load. Running a fully loaded dishwasher once a day uses considerably less water than washing dishes by hand three times a day. Outside the house you can practice water conservation also. Io wash the car use a bucket of sudsy water to remove soil from the car then hose it down only as a final rinse. Better still, take advantage of the
soft rains. Get out there with soap and a sponge. Enlist the help of the children. Chances are great that they will love to get out of the house and will welcome the opportunity to help you.
