WALKERTON TOWN BOARD NEWS I'he Walkerton Town Board met in regular session on Mondav. April 3. at ":(K) p.m. with all five trustees present All of the town employees were present and hoard president. W. 1. Flkin. presented Cliff Ward, retiring Police C hies. a gold watch for his outstanding sere ice to the I ow n of Walkerton The Police Depart ment also presented Mr. Ward with a plaque for his 42 years of sen ice as a policeman Monthly reports were given by the Fire and Police Departments. Gene Brems gave the board the monthly fire report The Department answered four fires, had two assists, one meeting, one false alarm and 2(M man hours. While assisting the Kingsbury Industrial fire on Fridav. March 31. the 1958 tanker blew an engine. thanks to John McGovern, who did most of the work It was suggested that the department might be looking for a used engine tor the future. Police Chief Lewis Whitaker presented the police department report for March. I here were 10 criminal arrests, six traffic arrests and seven parking arrests. The chief also asked the Board to raise the ( ontrol Center personnel's wages to the minimum wage of $2.65 an hour and to raise Joe Jankovec's wage to $3.65 an hour since he is now in charge of the communication department. On a motion by Prcntis. seconded by Ri/ek. the board approved the raises. The chief also wrote the following correspondence to the board: “Honorable Town Council. Walkerton. Indiana. In the past 1 have seen a dire need for an auxiliarv police unit in the town of Walkerton. Indiana It is my desire with the approval of the honorable president and town council members of this town of Walkerton. to coordinate a police unit that will be trained in a classroom and on the job training with a qualified officer. I have appointed Mr. Pat Laizure to head the auxiliary police, but with mv full jurisdiction over all personnel. John Marek, for their excellent response and aid during the tragic accident that happened on April 2. Mrs. Ed Klopfenstein presented the board with pictures taken of the back of her property showing the existing water problems. Her concern is growing due to the proposed plans for the land behind her property. She has been dealing with the Soil and Water Conservation Department in South Bend for some time now and she would like the Town Board to be aware of the specific problems before giving approval to a project that might present bigger problems in the future. Dan Denaut. president of the Planning Commission, presented the application and resolution to be signed and approved by the Board for the “701" local planning assistance. The proposed project is for updating the zoning ordinance and preparing land use planning to provide basis for preparing and maintaining the zoning ordinance. The resolution was approved after a motion by White, seconded by Rizck. Mrs. Darlene Beaver requested a tract of land adjacent to the Town of Walkerton to be annexed by the board. The property was approved for annexation pursuant to the ap proval of the Planning Commission. Richard Sytsma. representing Al's TV and Appliance, presented his quotation on redoing the sy stem for dispatching communications. His quotation amounted to $4,290.50. Rick Rivere. represent ing Motorola, presented his quotation for redoing the system also. His quote was $3,546.00. Ihe Board will appoint a committee to study these two proposals along with one from Burk Communications and hopefully come up with a solution to the existing problem. A discussion with a representative from the Clyde E. Williams
Associates firm on the Sewage 1 reatment plans led to the decision for the Board to apply for a single purpose grant to be able to w ork on the problem on a smaller basis in order to accomplish some goals that will eventually lead to solving the bigger problems. The insurance the town is seeking was discussed. The Board felt more figures and study was needed to make a decision. A committee will be set up to evaluate the facts and make a proposal for solving the problem. ON DEAN’S LIST Kevin Sullivan made the Dean's list at IU-PU. Indianapolis.
