Decorated The American Way Egg Shells The decorating of eggs, consid cred a sign of life, dates back to pagan times according to Mrs. Dorothy Anderson, who gave an "Egg Shell Decorating Demon stration" for the Walkerton Woman’s Community Club Friday, March 17, at the Koontz Lake Conservation Club. Mrs. Anderson said egg decorating is a universal custom w hich differs from country to country, but with the coming of Christianity, the decorators whom she refers to as "eggers”, began to use religious symbols. Mrs. Anderson's collection included eggs decorated with pearls, rhinestone, gold jewelry and trims, much of which she said came from friends. (Faberge, she told, used the real thing, diamonds and rubies, in his designs.) Eggs of all sizes from small bird eggs to larger ones of every species can be decorated. In her group were small eggs, the larger quail and ostrick eggs, geese eggs, chicken and even an cum's egg. Velvet, a favorite material was used to line eggs which held scenes showing altar boys, choirs, angels, Christ and other religious symbols as well as a confirmation group at the altar, a wedding, silver and gold anniversary celebrations, and a framed picture. The eggs which contained these scenes were hinged for opening and closing. Also found in Mrs. Anderson's collection was a bassinet with a baby, Cinderella's coach, a spiral stan case, baskets with flowers, a lamp, lined jewel boxes with hinges, and a creation with a drawer which could actually be pulled out A decorated egg holding a scene called "The Garden of Eden," is a prized possession of Mrs. Ander son. I his egg was given to her bv Adam, a resident of Germany . His right hand had been crippled with arthritis but she was able to help him overcome his handicap by teaching him to decorate eggs. He ami his wife Eve sent her the first creation made by him ami which they lovingly called "The Garden of Eden," by Adam and Eve. Mrs. Anderson is a true artisan
and all of her creations are original She makes all of her Christmas Tree decorations from eggs When a granddaughter graduates from high sch(X)l she fashions the girls prom dress and places it in a decor ated egg for "Eggternity. ” Mrs. William Dickson, program chairman, intnxiuced Mrs. Anderson.
