La Ville Edges Falcons On Late Free Throws The taste of an upset victors was in the mouths of the .John Glenn Falcons basketball players and fans alike Wednesday night as they were putting together a gixxi per tormance against the I a\ ille Lancers. Ihe boss had led most of the second quarter, fell behind in the third, but <ame back strong in the final quarter and held a lead with lime running out However, a missed Irei throw with J" showing that would have given the bonus sb >t. an apparent l.Aille violation which t neded up being a time out ailed promptly by the lancers but not rvcogm/cd bs 95 per cent of the gsm. and then after a game tying basket at 21 seconds. Glenn had ihc ball and the momentum in their favor but lost both. With a time out being called at ihc In mark, the strategs was set up and it was basic alls known by cservom. that thes wanted to get the ball to their big 6'9" center. Scott Doll, who had scored the last mm points for the hustling Falcons mpush them ahead 1 hev got the ball inbounds safely against a mild pn ss. got set in the offensive position thes wanted, but a lob pass into Doll surprised no one and reserved I anccr center Roger I ind .all got his hands on the ball, it eventually was pushed to Gars Sas di and an over anxious Doll was called tor a reaching in foul trsir.g to regain the ball with :05 left on the clock I his was like money m the bank tor 1 a\ ille Wednesday. as the ' 6’ Sas ill vs alked the 80 fixst to the basket, waited through a Glenn time out and then went to the line and hit both ends of the one-and-one to complete for himself a near perfect 20 point performance and the game for LaVille. Glenn did get a 30 footer off before the buzz er. a shot thes had a little more time to take but couldn't afford any dclas at this point. 1 aVille gpt the rebound and the time ran out with a heartbreaking 4" 45 loss for the I aicons to remember while the I anccrs enjoyed that sweet taste of s ictors I his ended avers trying season for the bos s and coach John Me Neil with a J I' record It wasn't expected to be a big sear at all for the Glenn team but everything that could go wrong almost did. starting right at the beginning with a broken leg to Dave Haag, and things seldom bounced right with the basic alls inexperienced, not oscrls talented Falcon team. Ihe lancers upped their record to onls I 1 9 but advanced to the semi final round of the tourney. The controlled type of play LaVille likes, one that depends on good shot selection and percentage plus a gixxi defense, controlled the earls going. Glenn also had shown the past few games a more controlled game, not a run and gun. was better for them using their big ad santage. Doll, more this way. It looked as if LaVille might really dominate it earls but things settled down to a pretts tight game all the was. Bill Rash and Savill hit the game's first two baskets and the Falcons didn't get on the board until J lb had passed when Doll made a las in Sas ill then popped al9 footer but lorn Mcxire hit from medium range on the right baseline. Jeff Horvarter. a starter in this game after not t<x> much sea son plus, hit from lb and Sas ill cashed in another 15 footer as the falcon defense was keeping the lancers awas from the basket but Sas ill's sharp-shooting was doing the job Ed Beasles got al2 footer and Doll the second of two free throws to make it 10' after one quarter. I hen came the f alcons best quarter of the game. Doll hit first, taking a Beasles pass for an easy las in Jeff Stratford hit two free throws for a brief leadand Rash hit one of two and it was 11 all. Beasles scored from in close and Stratford then hit both shots of a bench technical foul and then added a 10 footer I his foul not onls gave the f alcons these four points, but at the time hxik the ball out of the I anccrs hands. Sas ill was true with two free throws, but Stratford took a Doll pass after what the whole gym thought was an apparent double dribble bs the big man our front, but the las-in counted by Stratford. Sas ill canned another from over the zone and Mike Hosinski hit his first basket of the night from similar I range to cut the lead to two. AnI other basket by Stratford, his ninth and tenth points in less than six minutes, opened the lead to four. Howes er. Rash got two free throws and Sas ill another basket, this one on the baseline to tie the score again. Doll converted a threepoint play on a lav-in and foul and it appeared that Glenn would take a three point lead with them at halftime, but Sas ill had other ideas, canning a long 24 foot jumper just ahead of the buzzer to make it 24-23. I he lancers dominated the third quarter. Glenn started making more mistakes, the turnovers taki ing the ball out of their hands ses eral times in the period. Hosinski, who had a lb point second half against Glenn for a win in the season meeting, started off a great i second halt again with al4 footer. I Moore popped one from 12 foot and after Rash hit the first of two free i throws. Moore tickled the twine from 1" tor a 28-26 lead. Hosinski then hit from 15 fcx»t. Sas ill from 14
and Hosinski again from 16 foot as this range shots was about as close to the basket as LaVille could get. From this 32-28 lead, Doll pulled the Falcons within two with a 6 footer, but Horvarter banked a 12 fixstcr in. Beasley scored a lay-in but Hosinski matched this and Rash hit one of two free throws again for a 37-32 LaVille lead heading into the final period. LaVille scored first, a 14 footer from the lane by Jim Shamo. Moore swiped a Lancer pass and drove for a lay-in but Savill matched this. Moore made it 41-36 with a 15 footer as 5:02 remained. Then enter Doll to the offensive picture. Ihc Falcons started getting the ball inside more often as Rash, the 6'2” defensive man on Doll, was getting in foul trouble. Doll hit a short baseline shot first at the 4:22 mark. A minute later it was a lay-in. Then with 2:06 left, as LaVille was trying to run down the clock, Doll t(Kik an in-bounds pass right under and laid it in. Hosinski broke a three minute plus LaVille drought with a 16 foot baseline swisher to give the Lancers the lead back 43-42, but right down fkxir came Glenn and Doll was fouled making a lay-in and completed the three-point play for a 45-43 lead. LaVille didn't get any points in and Glenn got the hall, setting up the last 37 seconds when Rash fouled out, but the free throw was missed. It was Hosinski who tied it at :21, setting up the final come from-behind act for the Lancers. Savill Leads Scorers The two late free throws by Savill not only provided the winning margin for the Lancers, it gave him 20 points and the game's top honors He almost single-handed kept the Lancers in the game until gixxi second half support came from Hosinski. who finished with 14 Sav ill's outside shooting was exceptional as the Falcons defense shut off the Lancers inside. Doll finished his career with 19 points, getting eight baskets also and three free throws. Moore and Stratford each had 10 points. Stratford's all coming in the second quarter with Moore getting four of his five baskets in the second half.
