Chamber To Honor Athletes March 9th The John Glenn girls basketball team and wrestler Kevin Gaw will be the honored guests at a dinner sponsored by the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. at The Inn, Koontz Lake. The John Glenn girls basketball team compiled a 19-1 record with an undefeated regular season, captured the Bi-County Tournament crown and the Northern State Conference title. They also won the LaVille Sectional before losing to South Bend Rilev in the Elkhart Regional. Ihe girls are coached by Mrs. Barb Osowski and she is assisted by Mr. Jay Berkebilc. Wrestler Kevin Gaw advanced from the sectional to the regional and will also be recognized for his achievements. Kevin is coached by Mr. John Hostrawser. Tickets for the dinner are set at $5.00 and can be purchased at Ray’s Supermarket. Hook’s Drugs or Jacob Drugs. Presiding will be the Chamber president. Mr. Regg Williams, and master of ceremonies and guest speaker will be Mr. Kevin Huffstetter. who by the way has three girls on the team. He is a publicrelations representative for the Chicago White Sox. Everyone is welcome, but a limited number of tickets are available. Easter Bunny Breakfast Set For March 18 The Zeta Pi chapter of Tri Kappa Sorority will hold an Easter Bunns Breakfast on Saturday. March 18 at 10:00 a.m. in the North Liberty School cafeteria. Local children of pre-school age through the 4th grade arc invited to attend. MISS ROBINSON FIRST IN STATE Miss Kathy Robinson won a first in Group 1 of Classical Piano, at the Indiana Auditions, held Saturday, February 25, at Arsenal Tech, in Indianapolis. Miss Robinson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Robinson, 66306 Pine Road, North Liberty . instrumentalists from Argos. Bremen. John Glenn, LaVille, OregonDavis and Triton High Schools. The concert will be held on Friday. March 31. at 7:30 p rn. at the new Bremen High School auditorium. Ihe clinic w ill also be held at this location. WALKERTON TOWN BOARD NEWS The Walkerton Town Council met in regular session on Monday. March 6. in the town hall with all members present. The minutes of the February 20 meeting were read and approved. A report by utilities superintendent. Marvin Williams, was given on the removal of snow in the West York parking lots. Fire cheif, Gene Brems. made his monthly report to the board. There were four fires and threeassists for the month of February. A discussion followed concerning the assisting of Polk Township on fires and if the Walkerton Depart ment expected to be reimbursed for such assists. It was agreed that assists to Polk Township would bv on a mutual aid basis with Polk Township paying only for the gasoline used and that the local fire department would expect to do the same if Polk Township were to assist them. Brems also asked tor permission to send some men school for an 11 week session on tactics and strategy. The fee would be s4l per man and three had shown interest, Greg Back. David McKesson and Larry Dill Ihe board granted permission for such schooling after the discussion The newly appointed chief of police, Lewis Whitaker, announced to board that he half held a meeting with all the police force, control central personnel and the EM I s in regards to the communications system. His purpose was to clear up matters concerning the use and proper coding of information trans milled through the radio system. He also asked the board their m tention on the stray dog situation in Walkerton At the present time, the board has hired Mr. Remus for this duty. However, they feel that he has not met his obligations and therefore, they would like to hire someone else for this position Anyone interested in such a job should contact the board Cheif Whitaker also announced he has been able to get an additional of fleer through the ( J I A program Ihe planning ( ommission gave the board their approval of the pro posed greenhouse plans by Melvin Divine. Ihe board voted in favor of accepting this proposal as rev ommended by the planning commission. B F. Williams had also had a meeting with the planning commis sion on the possible recommenda tion of his proposed sub division. Ihe planning commission has pre sented a letter to the town board with the following recommenda tions for the proposed sub-division to be named Hickory Lanes, by Mr Williams and described as 34.09 acres of the southwest quarter, of the north-east quater, of section 26, township 35 North, range 1 West (between State Road 23 and Walk erton [rail in the south part of Walkerton). The recommendations are to install sewel lines, streets, curbs, storm drainage, septic systems and sidewalks as called for in the state and county codes; Io have the sanitary sewer and taps to property lines installed bv the developer, also lift stations, if required, to main lines at the time the development begins; To install curbs and sidewalks after lots have been developed. Police Chief Issues Warning To Motorists Police Chief lewis A Whitaker stated he is giving fair warning to motorists in Walkerton to abide bv the laws and he vows to crack down on speeders and those disregarding stop signs and those chasing emergency vehicles He further stated he has received too many complaints of motorists chasing fire truiks and other emergency vehicles "It creates a hazardous situation at the scene of any emergency I have instructed all of m\ officers to issue traffic tickets to all motorists interferring with emergency vehicle traffic and all other violations in the Lown of Walkerton "If this is what it takes to eliminate the present situation, mv department will take care of this situation."
