Shamrocks Win “One For The Road” Saturday By Harry Griffey The visiting Wheeler Bearcats were whipped by the North Liberty Shamrocks Saturday night 69-46. Ken Morton. The fans as well as the players were excited over the lead. Gregg Weiss, Dave Reed and Bruce Griffey scored as the quarter ended with Wheeler in the lead 18-14. The Shamrocks got serious in this quarter as Reed got a bucket in heavy traffic underneath and Griffey followed with a lay-in. Reed got a rebound basket before Bearcat Wayne Wilson hit a jumper. John Gouker stole the ball and drove for a lay-up. As the Bearcats inbounded the ball Gouker stole another and threw a nifty pass to Griffey who made the two-point-er. At 4:04 Griffey put in a 15 footer putting the home team ahead 26-22. Morton got a rebound shot then sophomore Gene Davis hit one from the side. Todd Allsop missed a one-and-one and the Bearcats got the rebound but were unable to keep the ball. Griffey made it 30-26 however Reed fouled Morton \ ho made two free throws with 24 seconds on the clock. Morton drove to the h<x>p on a nice play cutting the Shamrock lead to only two. Davis got one underneath but Tim Martin got a shot off from the lane at 6:40 to cut it to two again. Those two baskets proved to be the only points the Bearcats would get in the third quarter Liberty scored the next 16 points leading 48-30 as the buzzer sounded. As coach Jim Herter substituted freely in the fourth quarter the Bearcats did manage to score 16 points for the periixl to 21 for the Shamnxks. With about two minutes left in the game the entire starting line-up of the B-Team, who had won easily, was sent in. T hey scored six points while only giving up two on free throw s. Reed had 18, Griffey 16 and Davis 15 in this final regular season game. The Shamrocks record is 4-15 going into the Sectional Friday against Argos. February 21. the Shamnxks basketbail team traveled to South Bend Clay to plav a make-up game with the Colonials that was originally scheduled for December 9. This was the first time that North Liberty had plav cd in their gym and they came away on the short end ot a 66-48 score. Ihe first quarter was somewhat uneventful as neither team seemed to be able to get fired up in the cool gymnasium. Kurt Webber got things started for Clay at 6:58 with a side shot that only touched net. It wasn't until over a minute later that Bruce Griffev answered for Liberty. Greg (’oilier hit a side shot from almost the same spot Webber did. Griffey missed a short jumper but reliable Dave Reed was there to put the rebound in tor two. Gene Davis got one from the key then Clay called a timeout. John Kenney threaded the needle on a pass to Greg Collier
that tied the score at 6-6. After a Shamrock turnover Butler scored from underneath but was answered by Griffey from the side. Kenney got a driving lay-up to put the Colonials ahead 10-8. Griffev pop ped one in from the key to tie it again but husky Bill Meyer got a basket just before the buzzer to give Clay a 12-10 lead. The Colonials coach must have warmed things up for his charges during the break because they came out smoking. Greg (ollies was fouled shixiting by Griffev and made both free throws. Bill Meyer got another basket before Liberty's lanky Todd Allsop got a basket in close. Clay called another time out and Meyer got two more buckets making it 20-12. Griffev got a sideshot however Butler got a lay-in and Kenney stole the ball and drove in for a lay-up giving the Colonials a 10 point advantage. Davis got an eight footer. Colonials Butler and Tanner got one apiece giving them a 12 point spread. Allsop returned with a turn around jumper that ended the Shamrock scoring. Two more field goals gave Clay a 32-18 halftime lead. During the halftime I would have enjoyed looking this part of the schtxil over but due to the energy crunch I had to be content with finding the popcorn stand and over indulging as usual. The Shamnxks came back strong in the third stanza with GentDavis. the game’s leading scorer, putting in a 10 footer and Allsop got one from the key Kenney and Butler each got a basket for ( lav Davis answered again from the same spot before the quick guard Kenny got two baskets, one on an errant Shamrocks pass. Davis sank a technical that was called on Kurt Webber and Dave Reed sank one followed bv a jumper by John Gouker with two more by Davis. A steal by Reed added two, making the score 40-35 with Clav s lead cut to five. The Colonials added two baskets and Reed one more as the quarter ended with (lav on top 44-3”. The fourth quarter saw the Shamnxks getting some poor shooting as thev took a bad shot selection and forced mahv of them. Ihe ( olomals score 10 straight points and it wasn't until 3 56 that the Shamnxks fmallv scored.
