THE POPPY STORY Each year usually on the Saturday before Memorial Dav. millions of Americans walk to their homes and offices wearing little red poppies These small flowers are offered to the public by the women of the American Legion Auxiliary and other volunteer workers who donate their time and effort for this purpose. Os course, most of you already know the poppies are worn in mt monos the men who lost their lives in our nation's wars ... in I wonder if you know just how the D’PP' come to be the memorial flower f rom 1914 until 191 K the battlefields of I urope were trampled bv the boots of millions of fighting men From 19|" until 1918 Amenian troops were part of the Allied lories which fought to bring peace to I uropt and liberty to its sub i< ted peoples Months of hard fighting and thousands of lives *<r< the price paid for this obje< •ve As American troops advanced through France and Flanders they only touch of life and beauty they often saw were the wild pop pies that bloomed amid the rubble of war Along the trenches, around the sh< raters, and among the barb ed wire and wreckage the little poppies grew and bloomed Ihr hn. bi ssoms also covered the graves of American fighting men who had fallen on the battlefields; they soon twe atne a symbol of sac rifle* to the hv mg (Xhcr wars have been fought

since that time, some of the battles taking place on the same fields of Europe. Thousands of American fighting men again were called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice for freedom, and the poppy has become the symbol of our dead of the past wars. It is recognized as the emblem of the high ideals for w hich these fighting men gave their lives and many of their comrades suffered injury. I his is why we pin on a poppy as a tribute both to the dead and living American servicemen. The poppies still cover the fields of France beneath which many of them lie. On Poppy Day we all have an opportunity to place this memorial flower over our hearts in tribute to the sacrifice which they made. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 189 Nora Johnson. SENIOR CITIZEN BOWLING PROGRESSING Senior Citizen bowling is sure putting out some good bowlers. Ralph Persinger joined us and bowled a 200 game. Emil Vische, also new, bowled a 195. Dick Dipert and Stan Labno each bowled 193 while Sally Barna had a 179 game and Anne Jackson picked up a 5-7-10 split. But don’t think it is necessary to bowl that good to join us. We also have the other kind. No matter what we bowl, we still have a lot of fun. We had a total of 19 bowlers and five specatators last Wednesday.
