Szynski Richard Stefaniak Local Team Wins Tourney The St. Joe County Merchants, led by former Jackson and John Glenn standouts, captured the first annual Bi-County Independent Basketball tournament held at the Greene school on Saturday, February 18, by defeating a strong La Porte Farmers team 50-40. Ilie Merchants featured a bal anced attack with scoring from Alan Smith and John Manchow, from Jackson, coupled with the strong rebounding of John Harness, Jeff Morris and Bob Gerber, all previous John Glenn players. Also among the usual starters is Dan Smith, who also played at Jackson. I his was the initial year for the tourney which was well represent ed with six area teams from LaPorte. Walkerton. South Bend and North Liberty. W'ith name players such as Pat Maglev (LaSalle), Steve Austin (Adams), and Bill Werner and Steve Mixis, from South Central, the tourney included several close games and should be even stronger next year. SHAMROCK FRESHMEN END WINNING SEASON By Harry Girffey The North Liberty Shamrock freshman basketball team ended their snow-shortened season bv downing the visiting John Glenn Falcons in a close contest 27-23. Defense is what did the trick as the Shamrocks used a match-up zone and the four corner offense in the second half. The Shamrocks finish with a 9-5 record while Glenn fell to a 6-10. JOHNSON TOWNSHIP HOMEMAKERS MEET The Johnson Township Extension Homemakers Club met on Wednesday afternoon, Februars 15, at the Community Building with 19 members present. Mrs. Brooke Bowers, president, opened the meeting with the group singing and accompanied by Mrs. Orville Kiinedinst. Mrs. Bowers read a poem. ‘ ‘ Three Davs of Gold. ’ ’ Mrs. Martha Mull gave the health and safety lesson on the different types of flu. Mrs. FJburt Place, citizenship chairman, gave the Februars report on Lincoln and Washington, and told of the acceptance of the Getty sburg Address, at the time it was given. A nominating committee was ap pointed as Mrs. Amos Bicrlv, Mrs. Place and Mrs. John Williams to serve. Mrs. Charles Daube and Mrs. Bowers will get the lesson for the February 24 meeting on what’s new m the supermarket. The style show was announced for March 30. The March meeting will be a pot luck dinner beginning at 12:30 with a guest day and white elephant sale planned.
