Shamrocks Fall To Westville In Two Overtimes By Harry Griffey Two young athletes stand all alone at one end of the basketball court. The game is over and one of them is standing under the basket staring up dejectedly at the still net. The other just stands off to one side looking down unbelieveably at the floor. These two boys had just played their hearts out for the North Liberty Shamrocks in a double overtime loss to the Westville Blackhawks. The one boy. (iene Davis, a sophomore, had scored 19 points, the other a junior. Bruce Griffey, 16. but their efforts and the efforts of their teammates were for naught. The Blackhawks took the opening tip-off and scored first on Elliott’s 1? footer from the side. Dave Reed tallied Liberty’s first from the key but Elliott answered with another swisher from outside. Reed and Elliott exchanged baskets again before Elliott fouled Gene Davis while he was shooting and Davis canned both his free throws. Davis got a lay-in and hit a 12 footer before Steve Walker followed with a 20 foot shot that barely rippled the net and two free throws. John Gouker brought the ball to the top of the key. stopped and put in a nice shot over the outstretched hand of W'alker. Before the buzzer sounded Bob Downs added one, Reed two and Davis two to make it 22-14 North Liberty. rhe Blackhawks came roaring hack after the opening tip of the second period. Davis fouled BartHs while he was shooting, committing his third foul. Walker got a basket on a steal. Firanck got the front end of a one-and-one and Walker scored again. Coach Jim Herter called a time out to settle his charges down. Griffey, a nonstarter this game because of a bruised calf muscle, drilled m three straight from the left of the key as the Blackhawk defense left him all done. Bartlels popped one in from about a mile out answered by Griffey from the same spot. Grifhy promptly fouled Steve W’alker *ho sank both free throws and scored again on an inbounds steal. Steady Dave Reed hit from eight ’ret followed again by Walker for ’he Blackhawks. When the buzzer sounded the Shamrocks were • head by four. 32-28. W’hatever it was the Westville oach said at halftime, it got his diackhawks fired up as they scored tune unanswered points on three S teals by Colter who found W'alker I*o and a jumper and free throw I Bartlels. Senior Greg Weiss hemmed the tide with a basket fr om the side at 5:31. The Shamrock fire power had
cooled somewhat after the good first half. The Blackhawks patience and better shot selection enabled them to go ahead at the :09 mark of the period with a free throw by who else. Walker. The fourth quarter found both teams able to find the hoop. It was a see-saw battle all through this quarter with Westville leading until 3:12 when Griffey tied the score with a side shot. Conservative ball and some turnovers kept both teams from scoring until 2:20 when Davis was fouled by Bartlels giving the Shamrocks their first one-plus-one opportunity of the game. Davis sank both giving Liberty the lead for the first time this quarter 54-52. However, the Shamrocks only scored four more points to the Blackhawks six deadlocking the game at 58. In the first overtime the Blackhawks had more opportunities to take the game right away but they made only one free throw out of two chances at one and one. Walker followed with a jumper. A time out was called by coach Herter at 1:18 and the Shamrocks got a rebound basket by Griffey but the Blackhawks answered with one before fouling out Bartlels as he got Reed shooting for the three point opportunity at 35. Reed missed with Westville getting the rebound and as they came down the floor Downs fouled Shawn Hannon with 21 on the clock He calmly sank them both giving them the lead '’o-69. At 0” sophomore Todd Allsop fouled Eiranek who made one increasing the lead to three. On the rebound Reed drove to the basket for a two pointer but the blackhawks backed off so as not to foul giving them the victors 72-71. Liberty shot 53% from the floor compared to 46% for Westville. The Blackhawks out-rebounded Liberty by one, but committed one more turnover. Even though the Shamrocks made more field goals, 32-27, the Blackhawks made 18 free throws to seven for Liberty. The trophy case proudly sports three trophies they earned by winning the state championships. It has a remarkable tradition for a small school. It has no tradition as such on its basketball court but Friday night they held together and played a tough overtime period and defeated the North Liberty Shamrocks 76-68. It was the second overtime game for the visiting Shamrocks in as many games and the second overtime loss. The game started off with a somewhat revived line-up having Vic Solmos play ing a guard position instead of senior Bob Downs. Solmos took the first shot of the game from the side and scored the first points for Liberty. Jim Priester followed with a baseline shot to get Marian’s first points. Bruce Griffey put in a rebound basket and John Gouker a lay-in before high jumping Bill Rogers tipped in a Marian rebound. The Marian band played often and loudly throughout the entire game as their Knights fought hard to win. Griffey hit one from the key and was m the air at the same spot again when he spotted Dave Reed wide open underneath the bucket for an easy lay-in. The Shamrocks ended the period on a Reed lay-in making the score 19-14 North Liberty. I'hc Marian band seemed to play louder as the players came out for the start of the second quarter. Reed started where he left off at the end of the first period by popping one in from the key. During the Knights’ possession. Gouker got the rebound of a missed shot and fired a beautiful court-long pass to Griffey streaking toward the basket for two more. Priester tossed in a 15 footer for Marian while Reed answered with a rebound score making it 25-16 Liberty. Marian scored the next 10 points with Priester getting eight and Rogers two, putting them into the lead for the first time 26-25. A Griffey to Greg Weiss combination stalled their attack momentarily but the Shamrocks could only muster one more point as the quarter ended 35-28 with the Knights on top. Most of the Liberty fans went into the lobby for halftime to get away from the loud blaring band. The drummers made their presence known. Third quarter action got off right away with Griffey getting a three point play as he was fouled while shooting by Skip Streer. Reed canned another one before Dave Hamman made both shots after he was fouled by Griffey. After Davis hit a 10 footer coach John Cybulski called a time out to regroup his troops. As play resumed Hamman hit a jumper followed by a three point play by Rogers and a rebound basket by Rogers. Davis hit the next two, one from close in and the other from outside. Todd Midla scored his only points of the game on a corner shot with :39 remain-

ing. At :10 Griffey got a rebound basket as the periixl ended with Marian still on top 46-41. As the band played on between quarters the coaches had to yell to the players to be heard over the din created by the band across the flixir. Kevin Kruggel got his only points of the night on a baseline drive. Reed did his thing underneath and Downs added two more from the charity stripe. Streer answered with a swisher followed by two free throws from Priester who was hacked bv Downs. Griftev added two more baskets fol lowed by two more free ones from Downs. After a Downs field goal Liberty called a time out with 3:34 remaining and Marian's lead only two, 5"-55. After the time out Hamman and Baker each got a basket and Priester hit a free throw on a technical called on Davis with 2:53 remaining making it 62-55. Reed hit one free throw and threw in a two pointer to cut it to 62-58. Hamman got what was to be Marian s last basket of the quarter at 1 18. Dav is hit a jumper to cut the lead to four. Marian gave Liberty every chance to win the game at the charity stripe as they committed three fouls in .30 seconds which if made would have iced it for the Shamrocks. Instead they only made two to make the score 64-62 with 16 seconds left. Marian had a turnover and the Shamrocks got the ball to Reed at the key who fired off a short just a second before the buzzer went off knotting the score at 64 64 The Shamrock fans were jub.lant as the officials checked with the timer and signaled the basket good. The glee however w as to be short lived as the Knights scored the first eight points before the Shamrocks could recover. North liberty scored two baskets that were answered by two more baskets by the Knights giving them a 76-68 triumph. Once again the Shamrocks were beaten at the free throw line as they scored one more field goal than Marian. They shot 45% from the fkxir compared to 37% for Marian.
