Mr. and Mrs. Erville Kaercher are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this February 15. 19'8. All friends are welcome to attend open house Sunday. February 12. at the Lions Club Youth Building from 300 to 5:00 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Kaercher have eight surviving children. 32 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. All will be there to honor them on this grand occasion. K.L. Fire Dept. Responds To 100 Calls In 1977 The Koontz Lake-Oregon Township Lire Department, according to chief Art Borrelli, responded to 100 emergency calls in 19". These calls consisted of four rescues. 20 ambulance calls. 43 grass fires, one grain dryer fire, three wash downs, one power line down, two utilitv fires, three mobile home fires, one gas station fire and eight vehicle fires.

A total of 1126 man hours were spent on the various calls and most of the calls were in the month of April. Ihe April man hours totaled 325 hours. The loss for the year was approximately Sl'o.ooo. In addition to the rescue and fire calls, each man on the department is required to attend at least one scheduled training meeting per month I hey also attend special fire schools throughout the year. During a recent meeting the following officers were elected by the Department: chief. Art Borrelli; assistant chief. Lynn frame; captain. Paul Cleveland; lieutenant, Jem Pearish and on the board of directors are Ted Bierly. president. Warren Allen, secretary. Hank Paschen, treasurer and Merle Schaunaman and Jerome Howard, members. I he Koontz Lake Firemen’s Auxiliary presented the department with a Come-A-Long. a 50 foot high pressure hose and a sit of special steel chains. These items will ail be carried on the Rescue Truck. HOMEMAKERS MEET Twenty-two members and two guests were present at the Johnson Township Extension Homemakers Club on Wednesday afternoon at the Community Building. Mrs. Brooke Bowers, president, opened the meeting with a poem entitled, “Conversation.” “America The Beautiful”, was sung with Mrs. Orville Klinedinst at the piano. The birthday song was sung to Mrs. Floyd Dipert and Juan Hesters. Mrs. Klinedinst became a new member. Mrs. Martha Mull gave the health and safety lesson on high blood pressure. Mrs. Elburt Place, citizenship chairman, gave a beautiful tribute to Hubert Humphrey, as an American citizen. Mrs. Harold Knowlton and Mrs. Charles Daube gave a special interest lesson on the care and use of your sewing machine. Mrs. Esther Kaufman and Mrs. Daube gave a leader training lesson on food for one with discussion on both lessons. Miss Judy Dipert and Juan Hesters were guests. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. Place. Mrs. Clyde Snodgrass and Mrs. Martha Mull. WALKER ION Mr and Mrs. Earl Leslie have moved from the Wesleyan Nursing Home to 2001 Scenic Drive. Georgetown, Texas 'B62b. Mrs. Leslie wrote that its not that they are any worse, all the patients needing nursing care were moved since the Wesleyan Home is only a retirement home. Miss Michelle McDaniels, of South Bend, spent the week end here with her grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. John Solmos. Mrs. William Michalski and Mrs. Archie Brehm will serve as hostesses for the Koontz Lake Conservation Club carry-in dinner on Saturday evening. All members and their guests are welcome. On Tuesdas afternoon of last week Mrs. Harn Smith and Mrs. Arthur Omka. of Koontz Lake, called on Mrs. George Movers, Koontz Lake, and brought along homemade doughnuts in celebration of Mrs Meyers' birthday . Dr. and Mrs. John Guttman and son John, who was returning to Purdue University, stopped in Walkerton to have Mrs. Bertha Urbin accompany them to West Lafayette on Sunday and to visit with the Guttman girls who also attend Purdue. It was a relief to arrive home after driving in the blinding snow storm most of the wav to Walkerton Mr and Mrs. Richard Dipert. Koontz Lake, returned on Friday from a vacation spent in Hawaii and were accompanied by her brother and wife, of Silver Springs. Maryland In Chatsworth, California. they spent several days on their way to Hawaii and on the return trip They drove to Los Angeles and then flew to Hawaii where they visited the islands of Oahu and Maua On their return drive home thev visited in Phoenix and at Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico. son, in celebration of Mr. Ream’s birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Elder returned home last Wednesday from a month's stay in Florida at Crescent where they stayed in a mobile home. They enjoyed Cypress Gardens and the ski show there. Silver Springs, Daytona Beach and last, but not least, they did some fishing. A very nice vacation was enjoyed but returning to all this snow was not. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Holsinger and Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Holsinger and Heather, of Terre Haute, were in Walkerton over the week end visiting with their three daughters and their families. They attended the installation service of their granddaughter, Tammy Stull, as worthy advisor in the Rainbow (iirls for the term. A birthday party was given on Sunday in honor of Mrs. Pearl Stull’s 88th birthday. Guests were Mr and Mrs. Lynn Stull and family, Mrs. Vada Stull and Mrs. ( arol Blackburn and children, of Plvmouth. I here were four ladies from Walkerton that attended the funeral service of Mr. Charles M. Finch in Hanna on Monday afternoon. Patrick Cow ger. son of Mr. and Mrs. John C owger, route 5, Walkerton. is an intern at Webb Elementary School this month. It allows Patrick to obtain practical on-the-job experience under professional supervision. Robert Relos. son of Mr. Robert D. Relos. 29990 Riley Road, North Liberty, is doing his internship at Custer Baker Middle School.

SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY ENJOYED A surprise birthday party was given for Fern Gearhart on Sunday , February 5, in her home at 2:00 p.m. with lunch, cake and ice cream being served.
