Walkerton Picks Lewis Whitaker As Police Chief The Walkerton Town Board met in regular session on Monday. February 6, with ail members present. One main item of business was the naming of a new police chief for the Walkerton Police Department to replace E. Clifford Ward, whose resignation is effective April, 19 7 8. The choice of the board, after considering several candidates, is Lewis Whitaker. He was notified by the board president. Willaim Elkin, of the decision. Whitaker has been a full time police officer in Walkerton for 10 months. He formerly was police chief at Lakeville for 10 years and is qualified in all phases of police work and record systems. He was also on the county sheriff's department in Okeechobee. Florida for a short time and was a part time officer in Walkerton and North Lberty prior to full time duty here. He has attended the Indiana Law Enforcement Acacemy primarily for civil disorders, narcotics and dangerous drugs. He received a certificate of attainment approved by the Indiana State Police in the academy. He also has attended various seminars for various law enforcement agencies. He is a veteran of World War II also and is 51 years of age. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved by the board, claims 72 to 102 were approved for payment and the clerk was ordered to pay Snell, Inc., after finally receiving a claim on a longdue account. The board signed a resolution appointing Milton Mitnick as their applicant agent for snow removal aid since the reimbursement process for the snow removal will involve constant communication with the Federal Disaster Assistance Administration. Regg Williams, president of the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce, was present and instructed to write a resolution on the selling of revenue bonds for the Economic Development Commission The board appointed three people to serve on the commission, they are Regg Williams. Craig DeMyer and Roy DeSimone. Branson Hiatt, representing his own insurance agency, told the board about a workman’s Compcn sation plan for the EMT s. He also carries an insurance that could handle the Firemen s Compensation. The board asked Mr. Hiatt to investigate the cost of such insurance policies and report back to them. Fire chief, Gene Brems, gave his monthly fire report. They had one training meeting, one assist to the Police Department and one snow removal operation. Mr. Brems had three quotations for equipment that the Fire Department desired The board decided to act upon the purchase of this equipment after informing and receiving the approval of the township trustees Marvin Williams, utilities super intendent. requested bleepers for the electric department. A motion was made, seconded and approved to purchase the bleepers. NOTICE The Walkerton Chamber of Commerce will meet on Thursday. I he John Glenn girls basketball team won the LaVille Sectional on Saturday afternoon which advances them to the Elkhart Regional to be played at the Elkhart Northside gym Saturday, February 11. 12:00 noon, when they will battle with Riley, the winner of the Mishawaka Sectional. The second game pits Northwood and Goshen with the championship game set for 8:15 p.m. Northside gym is located on State Road 19 and Bristol Street at the north side of the city. A caravan will assemble at 9:15 a m. at the high school and depart for Elkhart at 9:45 a m. Tickets can be purchased at the high school office all week and they have the season ticket at $3.50. Session tickets can be purchased at gates 2 and J at Elkhart for the price of $2.00 Information On Water Users Billing Given Water customers of the Town of Walkerton are now being billed monthly since the rate increase went into effect. The first two months of each quarter, one third of the minimum is charged, the third month the meters are read, the total charge is show n on the bill followed by the credit paid the first two months. Former Editor Charles M. Finch Dies Friday Charles M. Finch. 87, of Hanna. Indiana, former editor of “The In-dependent-News", died at 7.00 p.m. on Friday, February 3. in Fountainview Terrace Nursing Home, LaPorte. He was born on July 25, 1890, in North Liberty. On June 4, 1921. in Hanna, he married Leone Denison, who preceded him in death on May 2. 1975. Mr. Finch retired as editor of "The Independent-News" and was a partner in the Independent-News Co., W’alkerton, from 1922 to February 1. 1957, with Clem De Coudres, a cousin, of North Liberty. He was a veteran of World War 1. serving with the U. S. Army and was also a member of the Hanna United Methodist Church, The Walkerton Masonic Lodge and the South Bend Consistory Scottish Rite 32nd Degree. He was a 1915 graduate of DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, where he was a member of Sigma Nu social fraternity. He was an administra tor of schools in South Bend. Gas City and Kendallville, Indiana, before becoming associated with the Independent-News Co. He moved to Hanna in 1957 after residing in Walkerton for many years. Surviving arc a sister. Mrs. William C. Shick. of Niles, Michigan; a brother. Samuel N. Finch, of San Bernadino, California, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. H. M. Wright, of Hanna. Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m. Monday in the Hanna United Methodist Church with Rev. Fredrick Pflugh, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Hanna Cemetery. RAY (SANDY) NUSBAUM Ray Arletic (Sandy) Nusbaum. 68. of 809 Illinois Street, Walkerton. passed away at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday . February 8 in Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton, following an extended illness. He was the former owner and director of
the Nusbaum Funeral Home. Walkerton, for 45 years. He was born on January 23, 1910. in Mid dlebury, Indiana to Samuel and Gracia Whitcomb Nusbaum. He lived here for 63 years coming from Middlebury. On September 1. 1935, in Walk erton. he married Ella White, who 1 survives along with three sons, Michael, of Fort Wayne, Roger, of Valparaiso, and James, of Boise, Idaho; seven grandchildren and one sister. Mrs. Harold Short, of Hamlet. He was a member of the Walkerton United Methodist Church, past master of the Walkerton Masonic Lodge No. 619 F & AM. St. Joseph Valley of Scottish Rite. Murat Shrine of Indianapolis, past president of the Walkerton Town Board, he served on the Walkerton School Board and was a charter member of the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce. Arrangements are imcomplete at the Nusbaum-Elkin Funeral Home, in Walkerton. Parent Advisory Meeting Set Oregon-Davis School Corpora tion will be conducting a Parent advisory Committee meeting at the O-D High School library at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 9. The committee will serve in an ad visory capacity for our ESEA Title I Mathematics and Reading programs. All parents interested in serving as a member of the Parent Advisory Committee are invited to attend the meeting. The PTO meeting is scheduled to follow , beginning at T.M p.m SOCIAL SERVICE MEETING FRIDAY The Walkerton Woman's Community Club social service meeting will be held on Friday, February 10 at 10:00 a.m. in the Community Building. Members are reminded to bring paste, scissors, a sack lunch and prizes for the bingo game to be played at Miller's Merry Manor on February 17.

Februarv 19 from 1:00 to 2:30 p m. for an informal talk Drift-Breakers Assist During Recent Storms The North l iberty Drift-Breakers really came through once again for persons in need during the blizzard that hit our area on Wednesday. January 25. and ran through the week end into Tuesday of the next week. Club members in both Walkerton and North Liberty used their sleds to carry medical supplies, food and even heating materials to some who had no heat. They spent long, hard, cold hours without sleep or rest to aid their fellow men Some oft our members who did not ride sleds used other ways to help out also. We are sure that if you were one who was helped you are as grateful for their help and efforts as much as the club members are. It is great to find out things reallv haven’t changed as much as people say they have. Our members and even non-members all pulled together to help out where and when their help was needed We owe a great big thank you to all these people. The Walkerton members worked out of Allen's Sunoco Service and at Gene’s Sunoco Station in North Liberty The names and deeds done by each one are too numerous to list so we will just give them a big Thank You and lots of praise and hope they are appreciat ed enough so thev will be there the next time they are needed and make no mistake thev will be need ed again and again.
