Billy Haney Hospitalized After Accident Billy Lee Haney. 24. Walkerton, willingly helped during the snow emergency with his snowmobile those who were stranded, snowbound. needing Ekkl or medicine, that were trapped in their homes, cti.. was on such a run when he w as hit by Brian Schmeltz. w ho was driving a truck southbound on State Road 23 where it intersects with Virginia Street, in Walkerton. He was rushed bv ambulance to the LaPorte Hospital where it was determined he had received a broken pelvis. Bills. Allen Schmeltz and Les Cable were dispatched from the emergency station set up at Allen s Sunoco, to assist and investigate the report of persons stranded south of Walkerton on State Road 23. They were returning to the station when the accident occured. Cable was in the lead. Haney was in the middle, followed by Allen Schmeltz. Cable made the sharp turn on 23 in front of the truck but Haney did not make it. The accident occured at 5:01 p.m. on Saturday. The emergency station answered calls for help from those needing medicine, food, people try ing to get home that would have been stranded otherwise, getting the pharmacist to his place of business, those totally without heat were sent fuel, hospital runs, persons in cars stranded, taking North Liberty police to their station, and the list is endless including taking the employees of the Miller's Merry

Manor back and forth from home to work In all. approximately 500 calls were answered by the 150 persons manning the emergency stations with trucks, snowmobiles, tractors, snow removers and 300 to 400 ( B ers with bases in Walkerton. North Liberty. LaPorte. Plymouth. leegarden. Koontz Lake, Donaldson. South Bend and surrounding areas. The Walkerton Volunteer Firemen placed a big roll in the blizzard by their help when they relieved the town employees so they could get some rest and on Sunday they cleaned out the fire hydrants around town. Although the area was hit by the worst storm since 19IH. everyone seems to have gotten along quite well and to some if it wouldn't have been for these people helping people. it could have been a disastor. Thanks are extended to each and everyone who helped during the emergency and we hope that the community realizes what fine people live in the area.
