Glenn Girls Win Second Straight Tourney Title The John Glenn girls basketball team won their second straight BiCounty tourney title Saturday night but in doing so did display that they don't dominate the young sport the wav they did last year. For the second year in a row it was Argos in the finals and they have come a long way but physically and experience wise couldn't quite keep up with the Glenn girls despite pushing them until the final minutes. The score was 49-37 in the championship game, but only the big last few minutes made this margin of victory as the score was still tied with five minutes to go. The win was the IS without a defeat for the Glenn team this year. The game was tight all the way, w ith Glenn leading most of the time but the stubborn Dragons wouldn't let the Glenn girls pull away. Julie Ryan and Mary Huffstetter hit the game's two first baskets and just seconds later it was 4-4 as Kathy Metzger and Lisa Arick matched these. After Kerri Gardner hit a rebound with 5:03 show ing, neither team scored for two and a half minutes before Ryan again got a lay-in to stay. Metzger canned a 10 footer and Ryan hit another short baseline shot and Glenn led 10-6 after one quarter. Huffstetter doubled the score on Argos with a seven footer as the second quarter began but Argos came back with five points in a row. as Metzger hit first, then Bert Thompson, both from further out and then Metzger got one of two free throws to drop. Huffstetter broke this string with a 20 footer from over the Argos defense, but Arick hit from the baseline and Sally Thompson hit one of two from the line to tie the score again. Ryan got the game’s next two baskets, coming over a minute apart. Bert Thompson hit from the lane but Barb Mann got a rebound back up and in. Bert Thompson's one of two from the line with 49 left in the half ended the scoring with Glenn holding a 20-17 lead at the main intermission. The second half was tight all the way until the last few minutes. The Argos team took the lead as play unfolded before Glenn could score. Sally Thompson hit the second of two free throw s and then Metzger got both ends of a two shot foul to drop. Bert Thompson canned a lane shot to give the lead to Argos and Glenn’s first points didn't come until the quarter was about half over when Gardner made a lay-in moving to the basket from the baseline. Huffstetter followed this with a steal and a lay-in but Metzger knotted the score again finding range from 13 foot. Mann got another basket from in tight but Sally Thompson, the only girl the Argos team had as tall as four of the Glenn starters, hit one of two free throws and sister Bert Thompson put the Dragons back in front with a 19 footer from the circle. Huffstetter’s solo lay-in following another steal put Glenn on top 28-27 before the quarter ended. Argos went right on with the job at hand when the last period unfolded. Bert Thompson hitting from about the foul line for the lead. Gardner got a lay-in, but Argos tied it again, failing to take the lead when Metzger managed to make just one of two free throws. Teresa Kemp, coming off the bench for coach Barb Osowski, put a 13 footer in and with 5:21 showing on the clock, Arick knotted the count again at 32. However, Ryan broke the tie with a lay-in for the final time. Kemp added to the lead with her second straight basket, this one from nine foot. Sally Thompson got a lay-in to fall taking a nice pass from sister Bert. Huffstetter again made it a four point lead and after a couple of changes of possession, Kemp hit her third important basket of the quarter, this one with less than three minutes left to put Argos in a bad hole, six points down. Bert Thompson hit one of two free throws and shortly after the Dragons missed the first of a one-and-one so Huffstetter just about put the icing on the cake with 2:06 left when she converted a three-point play, a lay-in and

also a free throw. A rebound shot back up and in by Sally fhompson ended the Argos scoring and for Glenn Ryan hit a short side shot and Gardner four straight free throws at the end to open the margin to the final 12 point spread. The scoring honors for Glenn went to Mary Huffstetter with 15 points, closely followed by Julie Ryan with 14 and Kerri Gardner with 10. Top rebounder in the game was Ryan with 18 and she passed out seven assists while Huffstetter had six.
