Shamrocks Fall To Bremen In Semi-Finals The North Liberty Shamrocks were denied their efforts at pulling what would have to been considered a big upset Friday night as a strong game under the baskets in the second half by Bremen's Lions, turned a first half North Liberty lead into defeat 54-42. The rather low scoring game found both teams defenses holding the other's offenses at bay in the first half as the Shamrocks never trailed in the opening 16 minutes. The loss was number sesen for the Shamrocks this year against three w ins and left the tourney laurels on a local standpoint strictly up to the Shamrocks B Team, waiting in the wings to play Argos for that title Saturday night. The Lions very apparently didn't want to get into a run and gun game with the Shamrocks and with their basically deliberate offense, always working for the good shot, they also used a pressure defense to keep the Shamrocks working all os er the fkxsr and try ing to make them work hard just to get the ball downcourt. This achieved the job as far as stopping the run. consequently keeping the scoring low. Gene Davis opened the scoring after more than a minute had passed as he hit a lay-in. Kent Adams hit an 18 footer over the Shamrocks' defense, but Todd Allsop put the Shamrocks back on top with another lay-in after almost three minutes had passed in the game. Bremen tied the count at 4 with a Greg Miller short shot but Das is quickly responded with a medium length baseline shot and then Bob Downs canned a 13 footer to push them into a lead that they held until well into the third period. Tom Walterhouse, who along with Miller gives Bremen two big strong boys underneath, scored next as for a minute or so. action had picked up and four baskets had been scored. However, it stopped here as os er t w o minutes elapsed before Dase Reed went to the free throw line and hit both ends of a two shot violation. Downs was next, pegging in another outside shot and the lead was boosted to 12-6. One free throw in two attempts with only :03 left in the period, by Miller, made it 12-7 after one. Reed added two more free throws to start the second eightminute stanza. Miller matched these points with a short side shot, but Reed came right back with a close-in basket for the locals. A

rebound basket bv Miller was followed by Jerry Smith's first basket of the night to make the score 16-13 before Davis went to the line and got two one-pointers to drop as the Shamrocks were getting the ball under fairly well when they were patient enough to try. Waiterhouse canned another short turnaround shot but Bruce Griffey, a non-starter in this contest, got his first basket of the action on a medium baseline shot w ith half the quarter left. A basket followed by Adams for Bremen with 3:47 left in the half and the rest of the first half was a critical time for the Shamrocks as they missed several opportunities to pull further away as Bremen had witnessed a little foul problem with both Smith and Waiterhouse on the bench being protected against serious foul problems. However, each team was able to manage only one basket apiece in this period of time, and they came right together as Reed hit for the Shamrocks and Ron Zeltwanger for Bremen, both from in close. This left the score three points in Liberty ’s favor, 22-19. at the main intermission. The second half turned out to be all Bremen. They managed to get the ball underneath to the big tandem of Miller and Waiterhouse and in the first four and a half minutes, this pair turned the game around. Miller was first with a 9 foot side shot. After one of two from the line by Reed. Walterhouse was on the scoring end of a play that beat the Shamrocks press for an easy lay-in. He later added a fast-break lay-in on a turnover, and then simply got another lay-in for his third basket in a minute and a 27-23 Lion lead. Downs broke this streak with a 20 footer from the outside, only the Shamrocks’ second basket in some 10 minutes. However. Waiterhouse got his fourth in a row for Bremen and Miller added a 10 footer to open a six point margin with all these second half points at this time coming from Bremen’s big men. Reed found range from 12 foot, but Adams and Bryan Fox hit back-to-back to open an eight point spread. John Gouker hit his only basket of the night, a shot from the top of the circle, and Downs added one of two from the line to close the third quarter out. Bremen leading 35-30. The Lions moved safely ahead early in the final quarter to basically wrap it up. Miller got the first two baskets of the period before Allsop hit a lay-in on a feed from Gouker and was fouled. He converted the three point plav, but the scoring stayed ail in Bremen's
hands for the next couple of minutes. Tom Morton hit two free throws and Smith and Miller were both fouled while making baskets, but neither could get the thrid point to drop. However, they had moved to a 45-33 lead before Davis finally broke the long drought with just 3:45 left in the game as he hit first from nine feet in the lane and then got a rebound shot to drop on which he was fouled to make it a three pointer. However, the usually explosive Smith, with only two baskets up to this point, got two in a row. the last coming with only 1:25 left as the outcome had been decided by this time. The Lions ran this streak of points to nine on three free throws and another basket by Zeltwanger before Reed hit two free throws and Greg Weiss a basket to end the scoring for the night. The final score was Bremen 54. North Liberty 42. The winners were paced by Miller and Waiterhouse, mostly from under the basket, as Miller totaled 17 and Waiterhouse 12. Smith did reach double figures in the closing minutes, with 10. The Shamrocks were paced by Reed's 13 points, seven of these coming from the foul line, while Davis had 11. The Shamrocks only connected on 15 field goals in this game never really getting much of a streak going. Box Score Bremen fg ft fta p Zeltwanger 2 12 1 Miller 8 13 3 Waiterhouse 6 0 2 5 J. The Shamrocks, a sophomore-studded team, used good balance and some real intense play in capturing the title for coach Glen Keel and the school. The game was basically a close one all the way and the lead was back and forth quite a bit. with the Shamrocks coming from behind in the third quarter to take the lead and eventually pull safely ahead for the win. Argos jumped to a quick early lead, moving in front 5-2 early, but the Shamrocks came back with a good steady attack to move to a 12-9 first quarter lead. The Shamrocks moved to a 15-9 margin in the first minute as Rob Moreno hit a basket and Jeff Martin one of two free throws, but in a three minute period the Dragons came back with five baskets by four different players while Moreno was getting North Liberty 's lone field goal, to take a 19-17 lead. However. Mark Vanderhagen tied the count with 1:41 left in the period with a lay-in and a rebound shot by Ron Price followed by one of two free throws by Vanderhagen made it Shamrocks 22. Argos 19, at the main intermission. The second half found the Dra-
gons starting strong. Hever pulled the Dragons within one with a short jumper, but Moreno put a rebound back up and in. A 17 footer by Davis was followed by a medium baseline shot by Hever to take the lead again for Argos. Scheetz added a basket as the Dragons had the momentum going at this time, but it was quickly to swing the other way as after a time out the Shamrocks finally got their act together and got moving. A free throw by Vanderhagen on a technical foul, got it started as an Argos boy was called for hitting a ball which was being held by a Shamrock out-of-bounds before the chance to pass it in. Price then knotted the score with a lay-in and over a minute later, he pushed the Shamrocks into the lead with another short shot. Moreno scored next, getting a lay-in. Tuttle hit the quarter's last basket for Argos and the Shamrocks still maintained their leads they held at all the stops, leading 31-29 going into the last period. The Dragons tied the score right after the last stanza started, but it didn't last long. Tuttle, the big freshman center, hit a short baseline shot, but just seconds later Vanderhagen broke the tie for the last time with a 9 footer from the lane. He then converted a similar shot from the lane area and after one of two free throws by Shcrwood, Martin upped the lead to five with a fast break lay-in. Once again one of two free throws for Argos, this time by Davis, found the Shamrocks coming right back to really take the game in hand as time was becoming a factor. Two free shots by Price opened a six point margin with 2:08 left and after the teams traded baskets, the clock had slipped to :48 when Brian Donathen's lay-in iced it up. Argos was able to get two more baskets in the frantic last seconds, but Price had a three-point play in the middle for the Shamrocks to put the game out of reach. Price and Moreno paced the Shamrocks scoring with 15 and 12 points respectively. Hever was the only Dragon to find double figures with 10.
