Glenn Comes Back To Defeat Shamrocks 81-73 The battle between two old rivals, both only sporting a single win going into the contest, unfolded Fridav night at the John Glenn High School when the North Liberty Shamrocks insaded for their sea son game and first of two meetings in five da\s as the Bi-County "luck of the draw " matches the same two teams Wednesday night. In a game that offered much in excitement. not always the best in bask ctball, but provided fans of both sides with "their moments", the Falcons outlasted the Shamrocks for an 81-73 wm. The final score was spread more than the action. Glenn opening the margin in the final seconds to the eight point difference. The win boosted the Falcons to a 2-10 mark and let the Shamrocks slip to 1-7 for the season to date. The was definately a game of streaks with both teams being their own worst enemies in the bad times mainly due to turnovers. After the very tight first quarter and with the exception of a few minutes in the final stanza, one team or the other was holding a definatc advantage as the momentum went first one way and then the other. The Shamrocks got first blood as Bob Downs drove the lane for a short jumper after just seven seconds had passed. However. Kris Tuttle canned both ends of a two shot violation to knot the count before Tom Moore pushed the Falcons ahead with a fast break lav-in after an even minute had passed. Bruce Griffey, by far and away the outstanding plaver in this game as it progressed, got his first of 15 baskets in this game with a 14 footer as the scoring was starting faster than usual in this game. One of two free shots by Scott Doll gave the lead back to Glenn, but Griffey canned a rebound shot on which he was fouled and converted the three-point play for the greenclad Shamrocks. Mike Dreessen got a basket for the Falcons as they barely beat the 10 second count against the Shamrocks' press, but then Griffey hit a baseline lay-in after a nice move to push the visitors on top again by two. Tuttle hit one of two free throw s before Griffey tallied again on a tip-in but Moore canned a 13 footer from the side on which he was fouled but failed to convert the third point. Then Dreessen, a husky o'3" junior, was getting his first varsity start for Glenn, got a lay-in that found the lead changing hands again However, another basket from under by Griffey plus a foul, resulted in another two

points as the free throw was missed. Craig Ochs tied the score with one of two one-pointers but Dave Reed came off the bench for the sophomore Todd Allsop who had picked up his third foul early in the game, and canned a 16 footer. A 10 footer in the lane by Ochs knotted it again and Reed and Tuttle traded baskets in the final I 7 seconds to make it 1 ’ all after one quarter of even action. Then the streaks began. Reed scored first, getting hammered shortly after the play began and he hit the second of two attempts from the foul line for a one point lead. However, the Falcons came right back with a lay-in by Tuttle, quickly followed by a fast break lav-in by Moore after a steal. A half minute later Ochs canned a short jumper and Moore followed this with another lay-in after a steal as the Falcons right now were really dominating play, mainly with a tight defense followed by easy shots on the transition game. Doll got a short baseline shot just a few seconds later to complete a fast 10 point streak and up the Falcons lead to 27-18 with 5:27 showing on the clock. Coach Jim Herter called a timeout to regroup his forces and what ever he did, certainly turned out right. A lot of pressure was put on by the Shamrocks at this point and just as quickly as the Falcons had skirted to the lead, they went sour and the tide swung to North Liberty. Griffey started what turned out to be quite a flurry with a basket that at the time looked only as if it stopped the Glenn streak. However. after his short baseline shot, he took a nifty pass from Downs the next time down the floor for a layin. Almost a minute passed before Gene Davis got his first basket of the night, a swishing 21 footer from outside the defense. Griffey came back with a lay-in after a steal and a pair of free throws by Reed shortly after put the Shamrocks back on top 28-27. Griffey capped this streak with a solo effort from one end of the court to the other for another lay-in as the Shamrocks had scored 12 points without a return. Craig Ochs broke this streak, hitting a pair of charity tosses with 3:31 left, but the momentum was so heavy in the Shamrocks favor that they weren’t about to stop. Davis got a rebound lay-in and Reed canned a bunny from the side. A free throw in two attempts by Reed was followed shortly by a three point play by Reed and all of a sudden the Shamrocks led by nine. 38-29. Doll got a corner shot to drop at the 1:01 mark, the Falcons only basket in the final 5:27 of the first half. However, before the buzzer went off. Reed hit first, then Downs. John Gouker on one of two

free throws and Reed again on a rebound effort just ahead of the gun and a what appeared to be commanding 45-31 lead was taken to the dressing room by North Liberty. The second half was as different as night and day. Coach John McNeil didn't allow his young players to push the panic button and returned to the floor determined to work for the good shot and get the ball in to their 6'9" center, something they hadn't done at all in the first half. On the other side of the coin, the Shamrocks either tried to control play more or just suffered a let-down that no one can explain as they came out flat and stayed that way for most of the remaining 16 minutes. They just weren't able to rebuild the fire that drove them so strong in the late first half. Scoring wasn’t fast and the Shamrocks started passing the ball too much, similar to what the Falcons did w hen they went sour in the first half. Passing up good shots for that one too many pass, can hurt as much as anything. A 12 footer by Moore opened the second half and Ochs followed with a 13 footer from near the line. Ochs got a medium range shot to fall before Dreessen put a medium length baseline swisher through. The Shamrocks took almost three full minutes to score when Davis hit a 15 footer. However, the Falcons came back with the next three baskets, the first by Ochs and then two by Doll. This trimmed the lead to two and the Shamrocks second basket of the half didn’t come until 3:33 showed on the board when Griffey finally broke free for a lay-in. Doll and Griffey traded baskets again but Davis also scored from under to jump the lead to six. A free throw by Ochs in two tries was followed by another short shot by Doll before a king-size goof-up by the timer or scoreboard, aborted any sensible action for quite some time. A rushed shot by the Shamrocks when the clock above them showed just over 40 seconds left, was followed by a buzzer as the other clock showed time elapsed. After some confusion, a jump ball was called and Glenn won the tip. supposedly with 40 seconds left, but again the mess was furthered as the clocks never moved, right or wrong, and another buzzer preceded a Glenn basket that was wiped out. The refs finally just called the third quarter ended as the bench sure didn’t know which was right or wrong or what to do about it. After about a total of ten minutes of confusion since the first errant buzzer sounded. they finally shut one clock off and reset the other to resume play. This confusion did nothing to help play, but the final stanza was declared ready to go with the Shamrocks holding a 53-50 lead. The North Liberty tide hadn't changed, and Glenn now was the agressor once again. Jeff Stratford put a rebound back in to start the action and Reed followed with a lay-in, his only basket of the second half. Stratford again got a lay-in, he being pushed into action by Dreessen's fouling out in the late third period. Stratford then hit both ends of a one-and-one to take the lead and Moore increased it to NEW HOURS For WALKERTON LICENSE BUREAU MONDAYS 11:00 am. . 7:00 p.m. TUESDAYS, WEDNESDAYS, THURSDAYS A FRIDAYS 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. CLOSED SATURDAYS 4tj26

58-55 with a short baseline jumper at the 6:04 mark. Gouker countered with a lay-in, but Doll canned another bunny from under before Griffey started his act up again with another lay-in. Stratford matched this, but Griffey put a short side shot through to pull the visitors within one again, 62-61. Doll got a three point play on a rebound shot on which he was fouled by Gouker, at least a foot shorter, from behind. Davis and Ochs traded two free throws each before Davis made quite a basket as he two handed a shot backwards over his head as he was being fouled and it went in off the board. He missed the third point as some faulty free throw shooting was adding to the Shamrocks woes in this tight game. However, the ever present Griffey tipped in Davis' missed effort to knot the score at 67 with 3:24 left in the game. This was the Shamrocks last hurrah as Doll got another easy one and Stratford upped the lead to four again with a rebound shot after the Shamrocks were called for an out-of-bounds violation, a dumb and costly mistake. Davis canned two more free throws but the Falcons then spread the offense some and started to work on the clock as Doll had fouled out on the last North Liberty free throws. Almost a minute was killed before the next score, two free throws by Moore as the Shamrocks were forced to foul in an effort to get the ball back. The Falcons continued to get possession as the Shamrocks were hurting themselves either with turnovers or hurried shots. Gnffcy made his final basket of the night but Moore canned two more one-pointers. Then single free throws by first Stratford and then Tuttle on a foul on the rebound, put the game out of reach as the clock was down to :21. Davis got a lay-in. but Damon Flaugher got one of two free throws and Tuttle a basket and two attempts on an intentional foul, of which he hit one. to account for the final score. Griffey totaled 31 points to pace the scorers despite hitting only one of five free throw attempts. Reed had 19 points. 17 after coming in in the first half to relieve the foulburdened Allsop. Davis also was in double figures with lb to account for all but seven of the Shamrocks points. The Falcons had a much more balanced attack, having five players in double figures. Doll ended with 20. 15 in the second half w here he also led the dominance on the boards. Moore and Ochs each hit 16 while Tuttle and Stratford had 11 each. Stratford’s all coming

in the fourth period after replacing Dreessen after he fouled out. Free throws were actually the deciding facton as the Shamrocks hit less than half their 23 attempts, getting 11 to drop while the Falcons total 21 points from the line in 30 attempts even though outshot from the floor by one basket. The fouls were about even, 23 to 22 with the Shamrocks being whistled only once more. Shamrocks B-Team Wins In a very long B-Team game which certainly had a whistled-fill-cd second half, the North Liberty B-Team continued to roll, having lost only once this year to Riley, and walked off with a 68-55 decision.
