Falcon Freshmen Win 4-Way Tourney Title The John Glenn freshman basketball team won the North Libertv 4-way tournament Saturday. January 14. They beat LaVille in the morning by a score of 45-26 and then played a very good game in the afternoon to beat North Liberty 34-31. North Liberty had beaten New Prairie in the second game in the morning. No individual can be credited for the wins, it took a good team effort. Glenn played excellent defense and was aggressive on the boards. Glenn was not a favorite with a record of only 2 wins and 6 losses, compared to New Prairie’s 6-2 and North Liberty's 5-2 records, but the desire and determination of the Falcons offset the records and reputations. They were led by junior Bruce Griffey, who set a new school record of 44 points. Although playing less than three quarters, the sharp shooting Shamrock put on a one-man show in the second period when he stored 24 points. The opening period had the Shamrocks scoring the first 11 points before the Tigers could find the range. Once they found the basket they clawed to take a one point lead at 12 II with 2:30 remaining in the quarter. That was to be their only lead as that period ended with North Libertv leading 17-14 Senior Bob Downs started the second period with a 17 foot jumper followed by a lay-in by Griffey. This was the start of an excellent scoring spree that was to have the fans on their feet and the team all charged up The Shamrocks scored 40 points allowing only 13 in this run and gun exciting period When

the buzzer sounded for the halftime. North Liberty led 57-27 with Griffey having 32 for the half, more points than the entire LaCrosse team had. The third period saw the Shamrocks coach Jim Herter put in many of his reserves to give them an opportunity for some playing time. The play started to become a little sloppy and ragged as both teams began to turn the ball over and foul. It was in this period that Shamrock. Vic Solmos, usually mild mannered, was given a technical foul and ejected from the game for slugging John Newman. It was in the period that the Tigers travelled to the charity stripe 14 times and made a remarkable 12 of them. The third quarter ended with North Libertv on top 80-54. 54. It was 5:32 of the fourth quarter that the Shamrock team had all sophomores playing. The Tigers tried to hold onto the ball to prevent the Shamrocks from getting the coveted 100 points, but the Liberty sophomores were not to be denied when at :44 Gene Davis sank both ends of a one-and-onc for the 100th and 101st points. The chant of the crowd changed from “we want 100” to roars and cheers as the points were registered on the scoreboard. Besides Griffey 's 44 points. Davis chipped in with 23 while Dave Reed score 16. Dennis Wozniak had 27 points for the Tigers.
