Nutrition Center To Open Jan. 10 At Koontz Lake Starke County Senior Services will open a second nutrition site January 10. at Koontz Lake. Sister M. Charles Schauer. C.S.C.. director of Starke County Senior Services. is happy to announce the opening of a second nutrition site for senior citizens in the Koontz Lake area. The nutrition site will be located at the Koontz Lake Conservation Club. This meal program, designed to bring county citizens sixty years of age or older one hot nutritious meal a day will open at 10:00 a.m. C.S.T., serve the meal at noon, and provide educational and recreational programs following the meals Monday through Friday. A donation of fifty cents or more will be acceptable, although Sister Charles readily states no one will be turned away if they cannot afford the donation. The meal will be catered by ARA Food Services of South Bend. Indiana. Jane Kuklinski, nutrition site manager, is accepting registrations for participants in the program. She needs the assurance that a minimum of 25 senior citizens will participate daily. If you wish to reserve a meal, please call 5862376. Starke County Senior Services presently operates a nutrition site in Knox for residents of that area. Janet Palmer, nutrition site manager, will be happy to take reservations for Knox senior citizens not presently enrolled in the program. The Knox site, located at the Eagles Building, serves 43 meals daily. This site opened in August of 1976 and has been very successful. Salvation Army Aids 27 Families At Christmas The Salvation Army committee reports that during the three days of the kettle drive in Walkerton a total of $631.87 was received for local use. A total of 27 families were assisted at this Christmas Season with a total expenditure of $465.00. Since all money collected is retained here to be used locally, the remaining funds w ill be used to assist in emergencies during the year, to help transients who need aid and held in the account for future use. A special thanks again goes to the Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club and the American Legion for supply the manpower to ring the bells at the kettles again this year. The Walkerton, Polk. Lincoln, Johnson Ambulance arrived here last Wednesday and is awaiting certification and a two-way radio which is expected to be installed this week. The ambulance is operating under a temporary certification. The new vehicle, 1977 Ford type 111 van is housed at the Walkerton Municipal Building and will be in direct contact with the Walkerton Police and Fire Department. The ambulance will be manned 24 hours a day by the local emergency medical technicians. The vehicle, $22,000 plus, was purchased through a fund drive of $25.00 family memberships in the area and public funds. If you have not purchased your membership for 1978, you still may do so at the clerktreasurer’s office. The emergency phone number if 586-2011. The ambulance was pressed into service on Monday evening, January 2. with a call from Harrison Miles. 88, who was taken to the Osteopathic Hospital, South Bend. He was the first one to be taken in the amublance and to use his membership for the service. Ihe Nusbaum-Elkin Ambulance Service has served the community and surrounding area for many years and would like at this time to thank everyone for their patronage. With the new ambulance the Elkins will not be running their service and citizens are reminded to call the Walkerton. Polk, Lincoln. Johnson Ambulance Service, 586-2011. if in need. Mr. Elkin has applied for a convalescence type license and hopes to soon have it approved by the state. LEGION AUXILIARY TO MEET TONIGHT Legislation and National Securitywill be two of the topics discussed at the 8:00 p.m., January 5 meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary . Unit 189. Reports will also be given on the Christmas baskets which the American Legion and Auxiliary gave over the holidays and the gifts given to the child the Unit sponsors at the children's home at Knightstown and the veterans widow at Indiana Veterans Home. Lafayette. Preliminary plans will begin for the American Legion birthday party which will be held March 4 when the Commander of the Department of Indiana, The American Legion, will be the guest and speaker. All members are encouraged to attend the meetings and participate in the activities.

Offer “Women’s Awareness’’ In Walkerton Women's Awareness, a self-de-fense course for women, will be offered at the Walkerton Presbyterian Church, 512 Georgia Street. The course is designed to help women to avoid attacks and to know what to do if they arc attacked. The course will be conducted each Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. for six weeks beginning January 12. Classes are free and are open to any woman 18 years old or older. Instructing the class will be Police Specialist Brant Klemm, Indiana State Police, and Sgt. Joel Wolvos, Crime Prevention Unit, South Bend City Police. The program is coordinated by Joan Schmeltz, North Liberty . All women who attend should wear comfortable slacks and tops and tennis shoes or low heel shoes. No one will be thrown during the class. Since enrollment is limited, all women must pre-register by calling the Walkerton Presbyterian Church office. 586-3301. Area Teams To Play At Home This Week End The two local teams will both be at home this week end. the Falcons of John Glenn playing twice and the Shamrocks of North Liberty play ing just once. John Glenn, now sporting a 1-8 record, will host the Oregon Davis bobcats on Friday night A BTeam starting time of 7:00 is set due to the time difference of the two schools. Saturday it is homecoming and the Triton Trojans will visit the Falcons. The B-Team game this night will start at 6:30 p.m. The Shamrocks, with a 1-4 record after they match with Riley in the South Bend Holiday Tourney, will host the very talented Argos Dra gons on Saturday night. The B-Team action in this game will begin at 6:30 p.m. NOTICE The Liberty Township 4 H Club will hold their enrollment meeting on Tuesday. January 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. John Brademas In Walkerton This Saturday Congressman John Brademas will be in Walkerton on Saturday, January 7 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at the J A J Restaurant, 621 Roosevelt Road, for an informal open meeting for patrons to talk with him. A few weeks back, a snow storm forced him to postpone a similar meeting. If the weather cooperates this time, he hopes you can join him at w hat is anticipated to be a lively and valuable discussion of the issues. Your views and ideas are importantto the congressman and the purpose in holding the meeting is to give you an opportunity to speak your mind and to question the congressman on his views. He promises not to give a speech. January expirations — all corporation or company owned cars and all leased cars. February expirations — All trucks, tractors, trailers, motorcycles plus all passenger cars and house cars whose owner's last name begins with the initials A, B or C. March — cars whose owner s last name begins with the initials D thru H. April — cars whose owner's last name begins with the initials I thru N May — Cars whose owner’s last name begins with the initials 0 thru S. June — Cars whose owner's last name begins with the initials T thru L You may buy your driver’s license in any county in the state of Indiana. The Bureau office hours are from 11:00 a m. to 7:00 p.m. on Mondays. Tuesday, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Closed on Saturdays. New Year Begins For Community Club On Friday The Woman’s Community Club of Walkerton will meet January b. 1978, at 1:00 p.m. in the Community Building. Reverend David Barnett, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, will be the speaker. Miss Jane Keefe. Ways and Means Committee Chairman, will conduct the drawing for the quilt and report on this project. Serving as hostesses for this meeting will be Mrs. Ward Aw aid. Mrs. Henry Hergenrother.
