WALKERTON TOWN BOARD NEWS The Walkerton Town Board met in regular session Monday with William Elkin, Michae? Corbett, Gladys Prentis and Jack Rizek present. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved and claims 626 to 669 were read and approved. The clerk-treasurer reported that investigation of monies left over from the Roads and Street Fund in 1977 may be kept over for 1978 use in certain projects. The Arterial Board in Indianapolis gave this ruling. Meeting dates for January have been altered and the board will meet on Mondays, January 9 and 23 instead of the regular dates due to the holidays. A contract from Hughes Associates was read, this being in connecting with the Planning Commision work. It was advised by the town attorney. De Vere Goheen, that the Planning Commission read and approve it before being accepted by the board. Ralph Wise was issued a temporary permit to operate a radio store in his home at 602 Monroe Street after he submitted a petition with signatures of his neighbors stating they had no objections of this business. The Library Board was represented by Judy McGovern and John Wathen and were informed by the Town Board that they would like to put an electric meter in the Library to determine now how much electricity the Library is using as this will be taken off the free electricity list in the future and the Library will be responsible for their own electric bills.

Gail Malstaff read a letter stating that the Park Board, of which he is . a member, was against the sale of the Urey Park in downtown Walkerton. The Town Board reviewed the letter from the Planning Commission and after compiling all the information and the opinions of the various parties, it was voted unanimously that they would not sell the Urey Park. The board approved the additional appropriation that had been advertised and it was signed and accepted by the board as such. The Park Board reported that they will concentrate their efforts on the Youth Building and surrounding area for next year. They intend to improve the building and grounds for more and better use. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Pointon appeared in defense of their property in question with the town. It was the opinion of the town attorney that they had no claim to said property as the Tow n of Walkerton bought the property at a tax sale. The attorney also suggested that a suit be filed to quiet title on this matter. WILDLIFE TODAY By Jim New Wildlife Biologist Indiana Division of Fish & Wildlife There are numerous things that one has to actually experience to understand and appreciate. The first time a horse runs away with you is a good example. The com bination of thrill, power, speed, fright and terror just can not be described or felt unless you have been there. I can recall another thrill I though couldn't be surpassed. The first rabbit I every bagged. I remember it well. I can, in fact,
still recall the cottontail breaking from a log pile and mowdocking down the farm lane. I remember the little 410 shotgun smacking my shoulder and seeing the bunny cartwheel to a stop. Since that time many rabbits have been bagged, most forgotten, some vaguely remembered. But that first one. al age 8. stands forever as my most thrilling moment in hunting; that is until last week. It was again on a rabbit hunt. Good friends were along: Jeff. Gene and his son David, my 8 year old son Dusty and me. Bark-o the wonder muttt. my 9 year old beagle. did the running. W'e had just entered the briar patch when a rabbit took off. Bark-o took up the trail in full voice and we scattered to await the circle the rabbit would make. Within a few minutes, four rabbits passed us but Dusty was unable to get a clear shot. Several shots were fired by David, however. When we finally got back together. David was very proudly holding his first-ever rabbit. I could sec the pride in his father’s eyes; but, like the runaway horse ride, 1 couldn’t fully appreciate it Shortly thereafter, we got another bunnie going and Dusty was able to get a shot. He missed and the look of disappointment in his eyes came dose to tears. But as luck would have it. the rabbit circled around and gave us another try.

Again. Dusty missed This time the tears came and that look of defeat was showing I spoke to him. explained that every hunter misses and we would have to keep trying. Be darned if briar rabbit didn’t make a 180 degree turn and try sneaking up the draw again. Dusty saw him hop into a small opening, the little 410 barked and Dusty had his first rahbit. I don’t claim to know all the reasons why 1 enjoy hunting. I do know that biologically it does not harm wildlife populations and in fact, often helps. I also know that unless you have seen vour son bag his first rabbit, you can’t know the experience. In old Bohemia, it was thought that throwing an empty pot on a crossroads would cure a fever Happy Ads make for happv faces
