Culver Edges Glenn 62-57 Friday Night The John Glenn Falcons squared off against the Culver Cavaliers Friday night in a battle of the winless in the current basketbail season and Culver took home a b2-s*' victory to extend the Falcons record to a 0-6 mark for the year The Cavaliers, showed a lot of hustle and desire and worked hard for their initial victory as the Falcons just couldn't keep the momentum going when thev would get it and again could get very little steady scoring help for their 6’9” center Scott Doll. Culver scored first, getting a basket on a 15 footer from the lane by Roger Osborn. He then made both ends of a two shot foul for a 4-0 lead before Doll got his first basket of the night, a lay-in all alone as Culver over pressed in the bauk court with a pressure defense Tom Moore hit a medium length baseline shot after several changes of possession and Doll then hit from under with the quarter almost half gone to give Glenn their only lead of the night, 6-4. With both teams struggling for consistency in the first few minutes. things did settle down a little for the visitors in the remainder of the period. Art Newman. Culver's biggest bov at 6'2”. got a basket from the middle of the lane and the hustling Steve Smith scored from eight foot for the lead. After one of two free throws by Ed Beasley, the little reserve guard. Curtis Thomas, listed at s’B" but standing closer to 5'4", hit first a jumper from 18 foot and then two free throws Don Higgins then scored his first basket of the night and it was 1" before Chris 1 uttie broke a more than four minute field goal drought for Glenn with a short baseline shot, ending the quarter 14-9. Damon Flaugher scored first to start the second quarter, coming off the bench for the Falcons. Smith cracked a 16 footer but Doll came back with another lay-in to trim it to three again before Smith drove hard for a successful three-point plav and Osborn popped in a 21 footer from the top of the circle. From this 21-13 lead, the teams traded points prettv well the rest of

the half with Stratford intercepting a poor cross-court pass in the dying seconds to race for a solo lay-in to make it Culver 35, Glenn 29 at the mam intermission. The third period belonged to Glenn. They managed to get the ball underneath more to Doll and with Culver witnessing a little foul trouble, but not yet serious, the Falcons took the play to Culver and got really back into the game. A free shot in two attempts by Doll started things and after Osborn swished another from the circle. Doll hit again from under. Beasley pegged in a 12 footer from the lane but Smith came back for the Cavaliers with a shot from under. Craig Ochs hit from 14 foot only to have Thomas match this for the visitors. Beasley put a rebound back up and in and after Higgins scored on a real fine solo effort beating two defensive men from under, Doll kept Glenn within three with another from under. Newman scored on a rebound shot as this quarter had been more action-filled than the others. Tom Moore got one of two charity shots to drop and Doll's rebound basket pulled the hosts to within two with 1:59 left in the period. Brett Master hit two foul shots for the Cavaliers, but Stratford scored on a lay-in and with just 20 seconds left in the period, Doll knotted the count from just off the side at 47 all. However. the visitors moved back in front as Greg Mishler scored from under with :07 showing to give the Cavaliers a 49-47 advantage heading into the final period. It seemed like Glenn had clearly taken the momentum in the game, but this stopped in a hurry in the final stanza as Culver started controlling the ball a little more, taking control of the tempo once again. A basket by Smith started the period right off the tip and after a Falcon missed shot. Culver ran a little time off. settling the pace a little in the game Doll put Glenn within two again at the 6:40 mark, but Newman bagged an eight footer and Smith hit a pair of charity pitches. Add one more point on one of two by Master, and the lead was seven again. 56-49. Tom Moore canned a 16 footer with an even five minutes to go. but Culver went into a semi-shell, however, still looking for that one opportunity for the easy basket.

The only question was could they handle the ball well enough to try and kill this much time. After one turnover, they got the ball back and went into their act again with Smith spotting the break in the defense for a lay-in with 3:14 remaining, thus making the time a very big element behind their 58-51 lead. Neither team scored again for over two minutes as Culver again let a little air out of the ball with their deliberate tactics before a Dol) basket with 1:11 showing followed two missed Culver free throws. The Cavaliers missed the first of a onc-and-one again, this one coming on Doll's fifth personal foul, but Rob Moore scored on a rebound and with 41 seconds left, it wasn't impossible as the Falcons had clawed back to within three. However, an instant foul gave Higgins two points from the line and after the Cavaliers got the ball back. Newman was fouled and he put all doubts to rest with two more free throws. Steve Hardesty’s lay-in with :04 left did nothing but determine the final spread as it ended 62-57, Glenn still seeking their initial win of the season. The Falcons did outscore the Cavaliers from the floor, getting 25 baskets to Culver’s 23, but the hustle and drive of Culver, plus some pretty decent free throw shooting put them on top easily. A 19 point performance by Doll on nine baskets and one free throw was the only Falcon double figure effort. Smith paced the winners with 21, also collecting nine baskets and he had three free shots. Higgins reached double figures with 10 points and the rest of the points were spread from three to eight for the other Cavaliers seeing action. Doesn't warming the house the next day require more energy than keeping it at a constant warm temperature? "Turning the thermostat down at night does save energy and dollars,” says Ella Jo Mood, Extension housing specialist at Purdue University. "What most people consider is the energy used as measured by the length of time the furnace is running. What they should be considering is the heat loss from the house," she adds. For instance, if a house loses 55.000 BTUs (units of heat) per hour at 68 degrees F., it will lose much less at 60 degrees F. (say 45,000 BTUs per hour). If the temperature in the house is reduced from 68 degrees F. to 60 degrees F. for eight hours, 80,000 BTUs are saved and the fuel to manufacture these BTUs is also saved. When the heat is turned up in the morning, as the temperature in the house rises, heat from the house is lost, but under normal circumstances. can't exceed the 55.000 BTUs per hour rate until the temperature rises above 68 degrees F. Most people are fooled into thinking that they are wasting energy because the furnace runs for longer periods in the morning to warm the home. W'hat they fail to realized is that the furnace may have run for only a short period during the night but may run for long periods during the day. (The furnace must run longer to maintain 68 degrees F. than 60 degrees F.). Os course, keeping the temperature at the night-time level day and night can save even more fuel. However, many people who prefer warm temperatures during the day, can tolerate cooler temperatures at night when they can pile on blankets or quilts or use an electric

blanket. "When heating specialists refer to ‘lowering the thremostat', what they actually mean is lowering the temperature in the home,” notes Mood. Specialists assume that the furnace thermostat is an accurate reflection of the temperature in the home. Although the same principals apply whatever the temperature when the thermostat is lowered, the home temperature can become too cold if the furnace thermostat is not accurate. Check the accuracy of the thermostat by placing a room thermometer next to the thermostat. Mood advises. I IM Mt CM Mt Mt Mt Mt Mt Mt KS Ig I liUMM I a K iwi^H * > Mm i i BW W» ... : r. .
