Flood Takes Home Os Former Resident The sound of water saved a family of four but took their home earlier this month. The home of Bruce and Pat (Westhues) Landos and two children. Carbonado, Washington, was completely destroyed by the flood waters of the Carbon River, about three miles west of the northwestern corner of Mount Rainier National Park, on December 1 at 11 :()0 p.m. Mr Landos had checked the river before retiring for the evening on November 30 and everything seemed to be alright. Their house had stood for 70 years on the south bank of the river and it was a sturdy structure, built as a schoolhouse and sheltered by 80 to 120 foot conifers, especially cedars that the first class of school children had planted. The house was 20 to .30 feet above river level and there
were 150 foot of forest between the front porch and the river. Ilie Landos family was asleep until around 4:00 am. Autumn awoke for her feeding, when the noise of the foundation settling startled them. Mr. Landos looked out doors to find the flood waters were running underneath the front of the house and the forest in front was completely gone. Mrs. Landos grabbed the children and fled to the neighbors about a half mile down river and the cry for help was answered by the men folk The neighbors, Victor and Pam Marsh, also lost a great deal. The flood was cause by the freezing level going to high in the snowy mountains, the rain had started very heavily and the results was the flood.
