Shamrocks Slip Past Marquette For First Win By Harry Griffey The North Liberty Shamrocks basketball team pulled off an exciting come from behind victory last Saturday night before an enthusiastic home crowd. The visiting Blue Blazers from Michigan City Marquette were paced by the outstanding playing of 6’5" Todd Pilarski. vs ho scored a w hopping 42 points. Gene Davis got things going for liberty with a short jumper but Pilarski scored the next three for the Blazers. Bruce Griffey had two steals to tie the score at 6-6. Pilarski. Goren and Pritz each scored a basket before Gene Davis added a three point play. The quarter ended with the Blazers in front 18-15. Marquette scored the first eight points of the second quarter on two free throws by Fisher and two baskets and two free shots by Pilarski making the score 2b-15. It wasn’t until 6:12 that the Shamrocks scored on a short jumper by Gene Davis. There was a brief even exchange of baskets and then I iberts scored the next four has kets with Dave Reed sinking one right at the buzzer narrowing the lead to only five points at halftime. I'he Shamrocks came right back in the third quarter with excellent team play and some fine passing Gene Davis. Bob Downs. Bruce Griffey and Dave Reed took charge of the scoring in this period. He added one more before Greg Weiss added his only basket of the night. Kip Hurley tallied the front end of a one plus one and the period ended with North Liberty on top 59-56. The fourth period saw each squad matching each other basket for basket until Andy Groen made both ends of a one and one to put the Blazers up on one 72-71. In a scramble for a loose ball, Todd Fisher fouled Downs who promptly made his free throws. Liberty scored again on a Griffey to Reed pass and Marquette called time out with :18 on the clock and down by three After the time out. the Blazers scored quickly on a jumper by who else but Pilarski and called another time out with :13 left. On the inbounds play, Griffey threw a long pass to Downs as he was streaking for the hoop. The ball t<M>k one bounce and Downs dribbled once and made the lay in for the final score. The Liberty students were estatic as they mobbed their “heroes” on the court. Coach Herter remarked that they were in both previous games but were beat at the free throw line as the Shamrocks had more field goals than both teams. Griffey and Davis each had 22 points and Downs and Reed 14 and 13 to account for all but six of the Shamrocks points. Ihe Shamrock grapplers beat North Judson 47-19, South Bend Clav 2 7 -24, hut were nipped bv St Joe 32 31.
