THANKSGIVING MEDITATIONS Lloyd E. George, pastor Koontz Lake Missionary Church 1 Corinthians 15:57 But thanks he to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. In this scripture, I believe Paul has given us reason for thanksgiving in three tenses, past, present and future. Past—We should be thankful for the great events of the past. For the facts of history that tell of victory of God’s people in the Old Testament. The Exodus, the occupation of Canaan land, the maintaining of national identityeven during the dispersion and the rebuilding of Jerusalem. Thanksgiving is an American holiday that has its roots in ancient history. We tend to think of Thanksgiving originating with the Pilfrims first celebration of the harvest festival during our countries early history, and perhaps the traditional celebration did. But in fact the attitude and spirit of Thanksgiving permeate the Old Testament and find their loftiest expression in the Psalms, the songs of victory and thanksgiving of the Israelites. We should be thankful for the faithfulness of the Holy Spirit and of Holy men who preserved the scriptures to the present day. We should be thankful for the Apostle Paul who became the first missionary to the Gentiles, thereby bring-

ing to us the great good news of salvation. Thankful for early priests and evangelists who endured hardship to further the cause of Christianity. Thankful for those hardy Pilgrims who clung so tenaciously to the New England coast and celebrated the first American Thanksgiving Present — I am personally thank ful for today. I think we are living in one of the greatest times in history. There are so manyexciting things going on today. So many opportunities for service. So many advancements in science and technology. I am thankful for the beauty of God’s creation, the changing seasons. the smell of autumn, the crisp morning air, the children’s eager anticipation of the holidays, for turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. I am thankful that the same God that gave Paul the victory through the Lord Jesus Christ, gives me the victory through the Lord Jesus Christ and wants to give you the victory too. Victory over sin, depression, discouragement, and despair. Christ IS the answer. Future —I am thankful for the hope we have today. I believe the future holds tremendous promise, however, we must face reality, we dare not hide our heads in the sand and refuse to face our problems. There are many serious problems in our world, but there are also many encouraging signs. Signs of people being willing to sit down and talk about the problems. Signs

of better understanding between churches, between Protestant and Catholic, between Christian and Jew and other world religions. I believe we have the technology to solve many of our problems: starvation, pollution, energy crisis, and problems of sickness and disease. I don’t see any reason to write us off as a lost generation, to throw up our hands and quit. We need to fall on our knees and pray to a God that never fails and then rise to our feet, roll up our sleeves and go to work to solve these problems. I am thankful, today, to God who giveth us the victory, past, present and future. Voice Os The People Dear Editor. One of the frustrating areas in our ministry to persons is the lack of jobs at adequate pay available Tn our Walkerton area. Many are forced to leave our community because there is little career-type work available that pays more than minimum wage. At a recent meeting of the Tri-County Ministerial Association (formerly the Walkerton Ministerial Association) the ministers committed themselves to supporting all appropriate efforts to attract new and suitable industry to the Walkerton community. We want to offer our resources to those forward-looking business people who are presently working to make the Walkerton Koontz Lake area a better place to live and work. Sincerely, The Rev. David K. Barnett The Rev. Lloyd George The Rev. William Hughes MARTHA CIRCLE MEETS The Martha Circle of the Presbyterian Church met in the living room of the church on Monday evening, November 21 with 12 members present. Roll call was answered with "If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be?" Mrs. Ruby Snyder, secretary, read the minutes. Mrs. Ida May Watkins gave the meditation of the Least Coin. Mrs. Norman Hostetler was in charge of our question of the month for our “Hunger Project." Mrs. Walter Pickavet gave a report on the Turkey Run Retreat which she and Mrs. Elizabeth Martin attended on November 11 to 13. Refreshments were served by the hostess. Mrs. Watkins.
