Falcons Drop Season Opener To South Central The John Glenn Falcons, putting a pretty inexperienced team on the court, opened the 1977-78 basketball season Friday night and lost a thrilling 56-53 decision to the host South Central Satellites. The game was a first, not only of the season, but for both head coaches, John McNeil, of Glenn, and Bruce Hardy, of the host LaPorte County team. Despite having six returning lettermen from last year's team, the Falcons had only starting center Scott Doll with a lot of playing time and the other five saw limited action last year. They did display in this opening game, the fact they have worked hard in preparation, but there will be a lot more work ahead for the boys as they advance further into the season. South Central also several boys without too much experience from last year’s team that was only 7-16. The early play was typical of an opening game as it took over two minutes for either team to score and the hosts drew first blood when Andy Mixis scored from under on a lay-in. Scott Doll, the 6'9” senior center, then hit two shots in a row from in close and Ed Beasley capped a fast break with a lay in for a quick six points in less than a munite by the Falcons. The two teams traded baskets by Norman Timm, Doll, Fred Ames and Jeff Stratford before Dave Haag converted a three point play and Stratford hit on another fast break for a 15-6 Falcon lead with about two and a half minutes left in the quarter. The hosts, however, weren’t about to play dead and Mixis came back with two baskets from over the Falcon defense on the side and Ames cracked a 12 footer as the Satellites were finding the medium range holes in the Glenn zone. Haag and Gary LaFollette hit back to-back baskets but a lay-in with :04 left by Ames made it 19-14 Glenn after one period and the teams now had the fee! of each other and playing con ditions Conrad Knskovsky spelled Doll at center for a few minutes and started the Falcons’ second quarter scoring with four stanght free throws. A lay-m by John Phelan was sandwiched in between and Mixis cracked another jumper, this one an eight footer. A free throw

by Damon Flaugher was followed by a basket from the lane by Ames and after Eric Wall cut the lead to two points with a pair of one-point ers, Flaugher broke a four minute plus Falcon dry spell without a field goal when he put a rebound back up and in. The two teams pretty much trad ed points the rest of the half with South Central never getting closer than three, but also, the Falcons were displaying a lot of trouble getting baskets, hitting only three baskets and eight free throws in the second quarter. It was 33 30 at the main intermission. Beasly quickly got Glenn on the board in the second half with a nine footer. However, the cool Mixis came back with two baskets, one from 14 foot and the other a rebound lay in to cut the lead to one. Beasley responded again scoring on a fast break, but Wall matched this from in close as it was obvious that the game was going to be close now with the Satellites showing a tremendous determination, especially around the boards against the taller front line of Glenn. Haag put the Falcons in front 39-36 with 3:50 left, but for a couple of minutes it was all SC. A seven foot hard bank shot by Timm pulled them within one and then Mixis hit a right baseline shot from medium range to take the lead for the hosts. He then bombed the game's longest basket, a 22 footer from the side to make it 42-39 before Doll got the ball twice inside and hit from under both times for a brief 43-42 lead. Timm’s 12 footer with 04 to go put the Satellites in front for what proved to be the rest of the game, 44-43. The fourth quarter was close and exciting all the way even though the action was not too fast. The Satellites were content to work hard for good shots and the Falcons just couldn’t get the ball into the center for the in close shooting against the collapsing SC defense. A Terry Walters 11 footer opened the final stanza but Beasley put a lane shot from seven foot in for Glenn. Walters and Ames hit bask-to-back rebound lay-ins, these being killing blows as the Satellites had no one over 6'2” and yet were out scrapping and especially out positioning the Falcons around the boards. Haag hit two one-pointers as the quarter was half over and Doll pulled the Falcons back within one at the 3 42 mark with another inside lay up. However, in a 29 second spurt, the Satellites four times went to the foul line and four
times came off with the first shot but missed the second to open a five point margin again. Haag scored with 2:19 left from 14 foot and Flaugher brought the Glenn fans to their feet with a fast break basket at 1:59 to cut the lead to one. but the Satellites then started letting the air out of the ball and managed to kill almost all the dock before Ames put the icing on the cake with two free throws with just 13 seconds left. A South Central foul that could have given the Falcons the chance to tie with :02 showing should they hit the first and put the second back up and in with their height advantage, went down the drain when the first one was missed as was then the second and the Satellites again out-board-ed Glenn for the game ending possession. The hosts were led by Mixis, who popped in 19 points, 18 from the floor plus one free throw. Ames, who really quarterbacked the ballhandling efforts in killing the clock, added 14 for the only other double figure total. Doll paced the Falcons with 15 points, six baskets and three from the line, while Haag also reached double figures with five field goals and a prefect three of three for 13 points. The Falcons drew more fouls, but hit only 11 of 19 free throws and were out rebounded by the shorter Satellites, especially costly were some offensive rebounds by SC that led to second and third shots and some baskets. Glenn B-Team Wins The Glenn B Team, largely composed of juniors, put a full court press into action in the second half to turn a close halftime score into a run away, winning 40-22 against the Satellite reserves. In addition to his much needed scoring from the forward position, he was credited with 11 rebounds and played what had to be his outstanding varsity game in his two year career. Not only does his loss hurt the varsity, badly in need of experienced ball players, but it also cuts the varsity and reserve team dow nto 1" able bodies at this time Haag has also been an outstanding performer in cross countrs and track for the Falcons in his high school career.
