Auxiliary Lists Halloween Safety Tips October 31 will bring with it the age-old tradition of Halloween or the day for “trick-or-treat activities.” It seems that with each passing year, more and more accidents are surrounding this nationally known and accepted children’s activity. Upon investigation, we soon find that children are being struck by cars as they engage in their fun and games, or become deathly ill by eating candy laced with harmful drugs, or become seriously incapacitated after munching an apple containing razor blades or needles. By following a few simple precautions, many of these accidents can be prevented. For these reasons, the National Commission on Children and Youth of The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary is promoting safety suggestions based upon the rules recommended by the National Safety Council and the program of the National Confectioners Association of the United States. Safety Tip* For “Trick-Or-Treat” Night 1. Children should wear costumes which are light in color, short enough to prevent tripping, and non-flammable. For greater visibility, the costumes can be decorated with reflective tape or bands so that it “glows” in the beam of a car's headlights, (if the costumes treated with flame-resis-tant material are washed or cleaned, they lose their fire-resistant properties. These should be treated after cleaning or discarded when dirty.) 2. Motorists — exercise extreme caution on "trick-or-treat" day. 3. Children have difficulty seeing when they wear Halloween masks because of the small slits for the eyes. Cosmetics or stage make-up can be used rather than a mask. 4. Children are advised to carry flashlights after dark If a pump kin is carried, it should be lit with a flashlight, not a candle. 5. "Trick-or-treat" should be confined to the child’s own neighborhood. 6. Parents or other responsible adults are urged to accompany the young children on their rounds. 7. Rather than eat the goodies while they are making their rounds, children are urged to wait until they get home. 8. Residents wishing to participate should keep their porch lights on. Children are asked to call only at lighted homes. 9. Basic pedestrian rules of the National Safety Council are: cross only at corners, never between parked cars, never diagonally
