Community Club Plans For Fall Programs Looking forward to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays the Walkerton Woman’s Community Club held a social service meeting Friday morning, October 21 to make favors for the R.N. Nursing Home patients in Teegarden. Mrs. Rudolph Elder, social service chairman was in charge of the program. In lieu of club members making Halloween favors, Mrs. and Mrs. Elder decorated the Home with materials appropriate to the season. Mrs. Robert Bowman, president, conducted a short business meeting following the work session. She reported briefly on the GFWC 96th annual convention held in Seattle in June 1977 wherein she stated that the delegates to the convention adopted a resolution opposing the establishment of an agency for consumer protection. This 1977 resolution reflects a complete turn about in clubwomen's attitudes in consumerism, but today's GFWC clubwomen believe consumer interests can best be protected by curtailing federal bureaucracy. The importance of crime prevention was stressed as was the energy conservation program. On nuclear proliferation a recommendation was made to halt further sales of nuclear power technology and reactor fuel under certain conditions. It was suggested that the club adopt Health as its Community Improvement Program and it was agreed to investigate to find the best program to be used for health instructions. Mrs. Ralph Listenbarger was appointed club historian due to the resignation of Miss Ethel Bierly. Mrs. Victor Schmidt, public affairs chairman, reminded members to bring their Christmas gifts, unwrapped, to the next meeting for the patients of Beatty Me morial Hospital. Gifts may be for men or women but Mrs. Schmidt mentioned there are presently more men than women in Beatty. The devotions given by Mrs. John McCombs pointed up the importance of treating others as you would like them to treat you. Looking ahead November 4, will be Guest Night and a carry-in buffet is planned for 6:30 p.m. The
Sound of Joy Trio and Accompanists will be featured. On November 18, members and friends will tour Century Center in South Bend. Plans for this jaunt are being com pleted by Mrs. William Dickson, vice president. The guest table was bright with colorful fall flowers, decorated pumpkins and of course, ghosts! Each member brought a sack lunch. The dessert was furnished by the hostesses Mrs. Gilbert Gordon, Mrs. Bowman, Mrs. Howard Ferguson and Mrs. Charles Shaffer. that Ernie was a speaker in Bridgeman where Ray’s son, Richard, was among the group. Finding out that Richard’s allegiance was towards the Pittsburgh Pirates, Ernie asked why and found out that coming from outside of Pittsburgh, and through the “brainwashing" of Ray, it was just a natural. Ernie's mission then, as he is still in the Cubs' employ, was to call Ray and try and convert him. Ray stated that after about a 15 minute conversation, he enjoyed talking to Ernie very much and the promise of tickets next spring when the Cubs and Pirates meet at Wrigley Field further excited a very surprised Ray Wilson last Thursday.
