WALKERTON TOWN BOARD NEWS The Walkerton Town Board met in regular session Monday evening, September 19, with all members present. The minutes of the previous meeting, which are mailed to the members in advance of the meetings, were dispensed with and the claims were presented and approved. The clerk-treasurer presented the financial report for the end of August to the board. Jack Powers, of Powers FordMercury Sales, Inc., approached the board with the possibility of purchasing the Urey Park adjacent to his business. He said his business was growing so much that expansion was necessary and he did not wish to move outside the city limits. His plans would be to strip the area and blacktop the land. The board said they would consider the issue but a lot of legal action would be involved and time would be needed. Ed Walz asked the board if they would consider letting him make a paved alley behind his businesses on Michigan Street. This would be done at his expense with the only requirement of the town being the moving of a utility pole a few feet. After some consideration, it was moved, seconded and carried by the board to allow this action. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Pointon were present in regards to the land they live on at present. The matter requires legal advice and the town’s attorney, Mr. Goheen, is in the hospital, so the subject was tabled until a later date. The subject of sidewalks along Washington Street was presented again. It is the concern that a good many school children walk along this particular street and for the safety of the children sidewalks would be a great asset. Further investigation of the matter will be held by the board. The Walkerton Firemen would like to paint three rooms at the fire station and agreed that if the board would provide the paint, the firemen would do the painting. They were instructed by the board to get an estimate of the paint. LaVille Hands Falcons 33-12 Conference Loss The LaVille Lancers used a very strong passing attack late in the first half and then a control type offense in the second half to hand the John Glenn Falcons a 33-12 defeat in a Northern State Conference game Friday night. The very experienced LaVille team, 21 seniors in all, was too strong and had too much power for the young, but hustling Falcons. The loss was Glenn’s third in four starts and evened their Northern State Conference record at 1-1 for the season. The win was LaVille’s second in two starts and their first conference game of the season. Late in the period, LaVille took charge after the second Falcon punt on the Lancer 41, where first a 16 yard pass from Dennis Freehauf to Roger Lindvall started a drive that later featured a 33 yard aerial from Freehauf to Bill Rash. This put the ball at the 12 where two running plays by Freehauf ended up with his plowing over from three yards out and the Lancers had a 6-0 lead with just 55 seconds remaining in the first period. They missed the try for two extra points on a pass. The Falcons then received the kickoff and put it in play from their own 32 after a fairly short kick and return. Bob Muncie and Tom Moore hit for 12 and 21 on the first two plays to move to the Lancer 35. Izdepski hit the line for four and Muncie got free on a pitch for eight and another first down. Moore then cracked for 20, putting the Falcons first and goal in tight. It took two plays before Damon Flaugher scored on a quarterback sneak. The Falcons tried to run for two points and missed, but the score was knotted at 6-6 with 9:49 left in the first half. Four exchanges of possession occured, including Glenn’s recovery of a Lancer fumble on the Lancer 33, but they ran out of downs without any gain to give the ball back to LaVille on their own 34 with the time becoming a major factor. After a six yard completion on first down, a short run was followed by six straight passes, three of which were complete to put the ball at the Falcon 18. Two missed aerials and then a two yard run, set up a crucial fourth and 8, and on a scrambling play, Freehauf finally unloaded to Jon Feitz. who came out of the backfield, for a first down at the one yard line. Freehauf scored on a sneak that gave LaVille a lead they never lost. He passed to Rash for two extra points and the score was 14-6 with 1:34 left in the half. The second half was more of a controlled type offense by LaVille

After the kickoff they controlled the ball for 13 plays and moved 70 yards in all. getting one first down enroute on a Glenn pass interference. They finally scored with Freehauf again sneaking in from the one. This made it 20-0 after the two point conversion was missed. Glenn had no success at all after receiving the kickoff. Getting only one first down in the third period and one in the early fourth, they then lost the ball on a fumble at the Lancer 45 to set up fine field position for the home team. It took just two plays, a one yard gain and then a 54 yard run by Feitz for the score that put the game out of reach for Glenn John Kindt kicked the extra point and it was 27-0 with 7:52 left in the game. LaVille scored again with just 1:44 left as a 35 yard drive was made in 7 plays after holding the Falcons very deep in their own territory. This score was by Scott Thompson on a one yard plunge. The final score of the game was Glenn's as Moore broke loose on the final play of the ball game from midfield and raced 50 yards for a touchdown, this giving him a fine night of rushing of 128 yards in 14 carries.
