The Clemons Sisters spent Labor Day in an amateur contest at Buck Lake Ranch, Angola. Indiana, and brought home another trophy. The girls. Crystal, 16, on drums; Julie, 12. guitar; Janeen. 9. at the piano, and Cherri, 8, guitar, were joined this year by Angela. 5, on the trombone, They played, “You’re Sixteen.” The Clemons Sisters were the only young people entered in the best band division. The sisters made their first public appearance at the contest last year. Since then they have played various clubs, schools and nursing homes in the Walkerton area. They are very serious about their music and arc saving all the money earned to go towards more equipment. Business Women To Hold Pot-Luck Dinner Meeting The Walkerton Business and Professional Women’s Club will open their 1977-78 year with a pot luck 6:30 o’clock dinner meeting, Thursday, September 22, at the Community Building. Mrs. Amos (Mickie) Hunt, chairman of the evening, wishes to alert members before the committee starts calling for reservations, that this meeting is open to guests invited by the members. Bring a covered dish and table service. The meat and drinks will be furnished. A program has been planned that should be of keen interest to every female 8 to 80 years of age. “How to say no to a Rapist and Survive,” a film provided by the United Telephone Company, from their film library, will be shown. The company has urged all employees to view this film when shown in their area. Be ready to make your reservation when you are called. The showing will begin at 6:00 p.m. “The Gospel Road", distributed by World Wide Pictures, was conceived and produced by Johnny Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, whose desire was to tell the story of Jesus Christ in a realistic and meaningful way. The film is a unique blend of scripture-based narrative, an abundant supply of specially written songs, and a series of in-depth character portrayals, with Israel itself as the mixing bowl. LOCAL FOOTBALL TEAMS ON THE ROAD THIS WEEK The John Glenn Falcons and the North Liberty Shamrocks will both be seeking their second wins of the season this week end as they are both on the road with very formidable opponents. The Glenn team will travel to LaVille for another Northern State Conference football game on Friday evening, kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The Shamrocks of North Liberty will travel to the campus of Culver Military Academy for a 2:00 p.m. game on Saturday afternoon. Both teams are presently 1-2 this season. AUXILIARY MEETS The Orville Easterday Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary met in the post home Thursday evening. September 1 for their regular meeting. President, Amybeile Wardman, opened the meeting and welcomed those present.
Laura Chapman Brovoid, the Unit membership chairman, reported that the Unit received yearly dues from 98 members. The Auxiliary year extends from June 1977 through June 1978 and 1978 dues are being accepted now. A report was given on the large number of awards that were received by the Unit at Department Convention in French Lick last month. Those awards included: Second place for Poppy Scrapbook which was prepared by Marsha Rushton; Second place for Poppy Centerpiece which was made bv Amybeile Wardman; a citation for the work done in the Field Service program. The report was submitted by Pauline Klopfenstein for the work done in the Nursing Home and Community, helping the veterans and their widows. This report will be forwarded on to the National Convention for competitition. Citations were also received for the “Best Americanism Report for Youth’’ and “Field Service Year Around Program.” The Unit received an award for the “Best Year Around Americanism Program on Flag Etiquette ”. Many hours of work and many pages of reports went into receiving these awards and the members are very proud of the recognition shown to the Walkerton Unit and Community. A special music program was presented by Pauline Klopfenstein. Members played a word game with the songs “America the Beautiful" and the “Star Spangled Banner" and Mrs. Jane Chapman won the award for top score. Several novelty songs prepared by Mrs. Klopfenstein were sung and enjoyed. Mrs. Jane Chapman gave a report on the Soldiers and Sailors Childrens Orphanage at Knightstown, Indiana. The American Legion Auxiliary helps with many programs and projects during the year. The ground which is located forty miles east of Indianapolis was first used in 1865 for a building to house the Soldiers of the Civil War. The Soldiers were later moved by the government to Dayton, Ohio and the Orphanage was started for the children of war veterans. Today the home has an enrollment of nearly 500 children. This past year the American Legion Auxiliary contribute nearly $40,000 to the home which included a new outdoor shelter at a cost of $3,000. ELach year the local Unit sponsors a child and remembers the child on his birthday and other holidays. Some members from the local Post will visit at the home on “Legion Home Day” in September. Mrs. Wardman asked all the members to remember to fly their flags on September 17 which is Citizenship day in the United States. The meeting was closed in the usual manner with Mrs. Linder Schmeltz and Mrs. Theresa Auman retiring the colors. The Church of the Brethren had their annual picnic on Sunday at the Pine Creek Church park. Helen Neidlinger visited with her son and family Labor Day and made a trip to Muncie to take her granddaughter to Ball State University. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Sheneman and Mr. and Mrs. Wilder Burnside, of near Walkerton, were Saturday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Zeno Miller, near Bremen. They all enjoyed slides of their recent trip to California. Don’t forget, Sunday, September 18, is Rally Day at the Church of Christ. If you don't have a church home plan now to attend. The goal is 300 for church service and 185 for Sunday School. Mrs. Mary Wesolek. Mrs. Effie Hammaker, Charles Vanderhagen and Edwardo Sinques attended a birthday dinner in honor of Douglas Wesolek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Wesolak, of Wakarusa. They also met their exchange student who will be living with them in their home for one year and is attending North Wood High School, Walter Tomasino, from El Savlador, Central America. DRIFT-BREAKERS MEET The North Liberty Drift-Breakers had their first meeting of the fall season on Wednesday, September at the Re-Lax Inn, North Liberty. Discussed were the cleaning of trails and rebuilding a bridge at Snyder s Woods. On Saturday. September 17 at 1:00 p.m.. we will meet behind Harold Snyder’s at the bridge to look over the work and decide what we need and when we can repair this. Also at the same time we will have a board meeting and work up a calendar for the season. The trips up north will be discussed and other events coming up. All board members should try to attend and any member who is interested is also most welcome. We have found a club room thanks to Gene and Norma Patrick. Some of our members met on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and started cleaning it up. W c still have plenty to do to get it ready for our next meeting so we would appreciate any offer of help. We are in need of an officers table and chairs for seating. PEP RALLY AND BONFIRE DATE SET The North Liberty Booster Club will sponsore a bon fire and pep rally on the evening of October 14. They will also be having a chicken barbeque in the afternoon in the cafeteria. The annual homecoming game will take place on Saturday. October 15 at 2:00 p.m. when the Culver Community High School football team comes to tow n. There are men who are happy without knowing it.” Vauvenargues
